I clipped my boy at the end of oct, and have not re done so since, i wanted to wait till after christmas to do him again, however he is very itchy and the second his rugs are off to tack etc he really itches his shoulders and stomache, yesterday he even went from a trot to a stand still to have a scratch, which hehas never done before, so do you think it would be wise to re clip him and then hot rinse him after?? i know some people wipe their horses over with a hot cloth thats been dipped in well diluted dettol or savlon etc, i've never done this before so could you give tips on what to do with this, Thanks

Did you not hot cloth after you clipped?! If you dont at least hot cloth them, some of the tiny hairs that have been clipped out will still be in the coat and will make him itch. Its like getting your hair cut and the hairs that get stuck in your top, ever had that? Enough to drive one insane! If he needs clipping again id clip and then give him a REALLY good hot cloth and try to get all the loose hairs out.

Never hot clothed in my life and never had any trouble, as believe it or not grooming properly everyday (which so many people dont do) works perfectly well, i have also moved yards in the last 10 days, he did not itch at all at the old yard.

Ours are both very itchy at the moment (one is clipped, the other is not). I think it's just because they're not getting the same amount of time without rugs on, ooor with sweat going through the coat.

I agree though, hot clothing with vetrolin, dettol or something similar may just be all thats needed

My suspicion would be that he is too hot! If his coat has grown and the weather has got milder. Try him in fewer rugs. If he is still itchy I would shampoo with an anti-fungicidal shampoo but the weather may be against you.

Will recilp and hot cloth tomorrow, huntley, the weather around this way hasn't really got any warmer but when the snow left i did alter what rugs he is wearing, i doubt he gets too hot, ps could someone give me an idiots guide to hot clothing just so i dont do anything stupid.
