help...i am at the end of my tether as soon as my horse enters his stable he immediately rubs on the door post, or corner of the stable and almost sits down and i am unable to stop him, he just switches off to me and i have to just get out of the stable, he is a shire x so is a big boy and i am not sure just how much more the stable will take as the whole thing shakes. It is his tail he seems obsessed with and i have checked for bites, sweet itch, lice, mange and worms...he is free from all these but his tail does have dandruff so i even wash it each week, he is on 'scratch' which is added to his food but that does not seem to be helping...does anyone else have any suggestions?

Have you actually dusted him for lice? I missed the obvious with one pony, couldn't see anything, but one dusting with louse powder did the job.

It may well be that your horse does have an alergic reaction to midge bites, a low grade sweet itch if you will, causing him to manically rub the affected areas, the neck and tail, being the most common sites for this.

I use neem leaf as a broad spectrum treatment for most types of skin problems and has had been very effective in treating a horse with full blown sweet itch on our yard.

Have you checked for pin worms? They are a pain.

When did you start feeding Skratch? I've found it unbelievable - but she has got sweet itch.

Is he rugged when out?

Try this website sweetitch.net I found a sweet itch lotion which i use on mine, for her itchiness, she is not sweet itch but scratches her bum a lot. a friend recommended it to me, its fab

My mare is the same and i've tried loads of things, brewers yeast, aloe vera, fly rugs I have just been reccommended this link http://www.aromesse.com/ which I am about to try so I don't know if it works but the website looks good.
My mare rubs herself raw, especially her tail if she gets the chance but she is out 24/7 in an electrically fenced field so doesnt look too bad

Have checked for pinworms but free from them and have only been useing scratch for a couple of weeks so hopefully that will kick in, have ruled out cushings as he is only 12 yrs old

I have a Clydesdale mare that enjoys demolishing the stable, gates, fences etc! I've found that she stops if I wash her tail with Nizoral - a human hair shampoo for dandruff. Cleans up her dandruff and saves the buildings.

I dilute it in hand hot water as it works into the tail to the skin better. Leave it for about 10mins before rinsing out and conditioning.

I've been using the Skratch plus but I started it before the season. It has transformed my little girl.

Is it related to moulting? Both mine are desperately trying to get rid of summer coat ATM!

my mare's stable is practically a padded cell now because of this problem! put her in last night and after just 10mins she had found a place on the door and rubbed her back end to bleeding!!!!!We have spent a fortune on various things,shampoos/herbal tablets/ Scratch supplements nothing stopped her.We had decided she was doing it because of stress (its as if she just has to do it) so shes now on "magic" she was loads better but yesterday a new mare came in the field and mine was amongst the ones charging at her and trying to double barrell her, even though she is "supposed' to be lame ??? she was so stressed when I brought her in! tonight loads better fingers crossed.

Hi,

Don't know if this will help but the horse we have had very recently seems to have a similar problem and was rubbing his tail in the stable. Have him in a fly rug with tailflap and have been using MSM cream for about a week and it has made a real improvement!!!!!!

Worth a try!
