So my highlad pony is very itchy at the moment. I think it might be to do with the winter coat coming through but wanted some advice on how to help her.

I'm going to seem like the over worried mother now but I don't like to see them itchy. She has to come into a stable for a few days in a couple of weeks time and I don't want a bald pony after 3 days especially as sheis a Highland and mane and tail are so imortant when you want to show them.

She currently has a fly rug on 24/7. I think this is helping but also worry she gets a little hot under it and that might also make her itch.
I was considerin giving her a really good bath on mane and tail then using something like aloe Vera or de itch cream on her mane and tail to try and stop her itching it. Although she is itchy evrywhere at the moment which makes me think it's her coat coming through rather than anything else.

Does anyone have a advice to avoid me having a bald pony in a few weeks time?

So not just mine then!
She is only a baby so not sure i'll clip her yet but i'll keep going with the brushing. I just hate to see them uncomfortable

As its quite warm i would try the bathing option. I bathe one of mine in Dermoline Insecticidal shampoo regularly which although he doesnt have mites seems to be the thing that soothes him most

Can you please be more explicit about the whereabouts of the itch. You say all over, but is your pony scratching some areas more than others? What's her general behaviour? Have you changed her diet recently?
For how long has your pony been scratching? You say she has a fly rug on currently. Is this a Sweet Itch coat or an ordinary light fly rug? Are the flies bad at present? Please let us have as much info as possible.

I have a itchy mare more so when coat changes I bath often in summer using a medicated dermoline shampoo I use a fly rug and gold label wonder gel on the itchy bits like mane tail and face, it is brilliant, i tend to clip her whole body in about october and continue to through the winter as she gets so hot with a full coat, I find putting a clean summer sheet under rugs helps as its cleaner on the skin rather than a dirty greasy rug.

Do call out the vet please. yesterday my vet came to my itchy horse and gave brilliant advice and remedies. well worth the cost for a comfortable horse.
