Itchy horse

Hi!

Is there anything you'd recommend for a horse whose beginning to itch their mane?

He's got a really thick mane which is quite scurfy at the base, so I've washed it with soothing shampoo & a friend has lent me some de-itch lotion by Leovet, but is there anything particular you'd recommend applying?

I've got the vet coming out for annual jabs next week, so I'll get them to have a look too.

How long have you had the horse? Do you know if it had sweet-itch last summer?

I use Camrosa....you can only get it online/mail order from their website camrosa.co.uk takes a couple of applications but v effective

I've had him 4 years now & he's never had sweet itch before. Can they suddenly develop sweet itch?

second vote for camrosa. If he's just started doing it I'd be looking at diet, mine itches on too much spring grass, haylage, lack of copper, buttercups, and alfalfa.

They can, unfortunately. If he hasn't been itchy before I would first try an insecticide just in case he has a crawler or two. See what the vet thinks and if he's still itchy a sweet itch rug is the best thing to try.

Currently trying weekly mane / tail washes and neem oil for my horse. Only be trying this so far this year, so a bit early to say it works. She doesn't seem to be itching her mane at the moment.
