Luna is really itchy, and we don’t know why. Has been noticeable for the last week. Have searched her very thoroughly, and no sign of fleas. Our cat has an allergy to flea dirt, so it is very obvious when he has them, and he’s clear, and Aled isn’t itchy at all.

She is fed on Millie’s Wolfheart, has been for months, so not sure it’s a food allergy. They normally have treats in a kong with peanut butter if we go out without them. Will stop the treats and put some Millie’s in instead from now on in case it is them. Could it be the peanut butter?

It seems to be her tummy and neck that she’s scratching, not chewing paws or anything.

Am wondering if it could be the heat causing it, or maybe she is actually going to come into season at some point?

Any ideas before we take her to the vet?

Environmental due to dusty conditions? Grass allergy now it’s all dead and crumbly? Sounds likely if it’s on her belly-contact with grass?

Manufacturers often change ingredients and don’t advertise the fact. I shouldn’t think it’s the peanut butter. Check treats for grain, often a big culprit.

I used to have a Lab with a grass allergy which sounds similar, she was always worse in Summer, rather than Spring. Equally it could be that she has built up an intolerance to something in the food over time.

Thanks guys. Things to think about. We don’t usually bath her, but think maybe a cool bath/shower in case of pollens, dust etc? Everywhere here is very dusty at the moment, and the grass is just hay now.

Will stop with the treats just in case too.

Itching can also be associated with a high protein content in the diet? Not sure how much protein MW has it in, so that might not be applicable :)

Have had a look at ingredients this morning. The food is a 70/30 mix. No grains, rice, beet pulp, eggs, chicken.

She’s been on it for about 6 months now with no problems, but can get a 60/40 mix to see if that helps. If no change, will pop along to the vets.

We didn’t get her until the end of August last year, so didn’t have her in the height of summer, and obviously last summer was nothing like this one anyway.

I would guess heat/grass related, but when Tawny gets itchy it is her ears that are infected, but she scratches her head and neck, not tummy.
MWH 70/30 is very high protein.

Just a little update.

She had her first bath ever last Friday, and was very good considering she’d never had one before. For a dog that always looks spotlessly clean, the dirty shampoo that we rinsed off was pretty surprising :p

We’ve cut out the treats, she has come into season (yuck), and it has cooled down quite a bit and she is way less itchy. We are using up the last of the feed they are on, and will order one with less protein next time, but I’m not so sure it is the food as such.

If shes been on food 6 months unlikely to be that- more likely pollen/ grass etc- I'd chat with your vet about best way to settle it if a sensitive shampoo doesnt clear it.

The Westie was on MW for a few months and then started getting itchy, so much so that she chewed herself sore, so we put her back on the Burns kibble and the itchiness went away. Really surprising and also sad as her stomach was much better on the MW but the skin sensitivity was unbearable.
