My new gelding has started scratching his tail and forelock when he is in the stable. He was kept in for 2 days when I bought him home, and I did not see him scratch once - so it seems a recent thing. My original thoughts were mild sweet itch or mites? I have had a poke around and cannot see anything crawling, but he is scurfy and has dandruff (bath planned asap). Is it worth using something insecticidal, or getting the vet to have a look (due in a month for vaccs)?

Would just give a really good bath asap - might just be a combination of heat, last of winter coat etc. I would use a tea tree shampoo - and maybe wash twice and rinse properly. Then if he is still itching consider your options.

Use avon skin so soft dry oil spray. Its great for stopping them scratching and its really kind on the skin. Wash the mane and tail first so its clean before you use anything on it

My horse does this when he has foods he is intolerant off such as alfalfa, sugar beet, garlic and even grass.

Try bathing him in dermasol or a tea tree shampoo and see if this helps to begin with.

give him a good bath in in tea tree shampoo then put fly spray on and some switch witch you can get from the vets and see how that goes!

Mine do this when the weather warms up. I rub LOADS of pure aloe vera into the itchy areas & that soothes the skin & stops them itching. I have to do it every 2 days.
