Has anyone experienced their horse stopping to itch their nose whilst riding? Have a thoroughbred ex racer that has started to do this more and more now and worried its something more serious, dont want this to become a habit. any suggestions?

My TBx used to do this when we turned for home on a hack and as we started to cool down in the school . I know that her previous owner used to allow her to do it whenever she wanted and it has become a bit of a habit (more like OCD) with her. It took me quite a while to break it and a year later she will still try it if someone else rides her!

Weirdly my TB ex racer also does it! I used to let him but then realized he's not got an itch its just some odd habbit- the second i loosen the reins enough his head is rubbing below his knee!
I've never worried about it and he wont try and do it anymore whilst being ridden but its the first thing he does the second i let go!

Thank you for your reply, yes that is when he does this and its a bit annoying when he does it when he's doing a dressage test at a walk on a long rein!!

So pleased I am not the only one experiencing this! Think i will have a word with my vet and see if there is anything we can do and let you guys know.
