Just wondering if anyones elses dogs suffer from time to time with really itchy paws - usually about an hour after a walk, when all they want to do is 'dig' and 'scuff' the carpet?
The spaniel has always done this, but it's not every walk, nor even every week. I don't think she suffered at alll over the summer. I thought it was then because of the damp, but its as if she has run through stinging nettles. Which she has done many times, and not suffered.
Then along comes pup, and tonight, (only had her since Sunday), and she is acting the same tonight, but the spaniel is fine. Pup has been on lead walks, and I haven't seen anything suspect that would cause this. Walk was at 5pm. Itchyness started about an hour ago!!
Just seems really confusing!!

Sorry, yes, they do chew at their paws too, and run in circles ''skating'' on the carpet!! Sometimes it's one paw, or the back ones, or all 4.
Todays walk didn't include any roads, all private parkland and a bit of mud!
Spaniel had itchy paws on Monday, and ran through some dirty puddles... ran through same puddles today and nothing. Sometimes it happens in my 'at home' walks, but this week, its the 'at work' walks.
The spaniel is very sensitive anyway - well with her digestive system anyway!
I've tried washing paws in the past, to help soothe just in case. it didn't help.
Obviously, it's just a bit weird. They get over it, but while it's going on, they are a little distressed. There is nothing to show.

Grit/nettles seems likely, but possibly paws drying out after a walk get a little 'itchy'? In the winter, my hands get very dry and feel tight and itchy after spending any time in water.

Anyway, the whippet used to have the same after running through nettles, but not always, as I think there are some types that are really vicious, and would sting me for at least 24 hrs if I'd been foolish enough to touch them. If the whippet had an episode, I had Piriton from the vets that would sort him out in about 20 mins.
 
The fact that it only happens after a walk does point to an environmental cause in the case of your dog but itchy paws are also a sign of food sensitivity.

Might well be nettles. Rufus had a daft half hour last week with an itchy paw (just the one) but I couldn't think that we had gone anywhere different. Sometimes there's no obvious reason.

Lots of grit about at the moment so they're all getting a rinse after a walk, even though it's quite dry. I just hose their feet when we get home.
