Can anyone help me? I have a youngster she's been with me since November, during the winter she was rugged and lived out mainly, she had a few rain scald scabs when she came, but they have all cleared up.

Anyhow onto now, when i bought her in the other day she started to rub her tail on the stable wall, consequently the wall is now loose  so i daredn't even stand her in to be brushed, as im concerned she may push the wall down.

I have de loused but this doesn't seem to have made a difference, so i have covered her in a cream midge repellent cream, although after all this rain im assuming she'll need another dose again, it did say it could be applied once a week, but would need doing again after heavy rain.

I just don't know where to start, i don't know if i should rug her in a fly rug, buy her a sweet itch rug and treat her as though she has sweet itch, try and bathe her with some Seleen shampoo or similar, my old boy had itchy skin, but had a bacterial infection not sweet itch, he also demolished a stable with his itching.

Sorry its long - chocolate brownies on offer ;)

The only thing that works for my mare's sweet itch is 'benzyl benzoate' lotion. I ordered mine off the internet for about £13 a litre.
I just rub it in to the skin of the mail and tail, and she stops itching completely- even when out unrugged in all the midges! its really nice to see her so comfortable. I suppose it may work for your horse too? Would have to look it up. I know it's used for other conditions

Hoofprints - thank you, i did consider the 'benzyl benzoate' however im a bit worried about trying it as i know her breed can be pretty sensitive and i used this for my old boy, which seriously agitated him, resulting in the stable wall being knocked down - maybe i'll give it a google i can only try can't i :)

Have you considered all the possiblities? There could be lots of reasons why she's itchy eg moulting or just one hair around the dock area drives my pony to distraction. The trouble is once they start scratching they tend to make the area sore which causes more itching - a vicious circle :(

Just saying it could be something simple which doesn't need expensive potions or rugs. Good luck, I hope you find the cause.

This is the thing, im not sure why she is itching to be honest, like i say she has been de loused, her winter coat is all gone now, and she has a very fine summer coat, i can't see any breaks in the skin, scabs or anything obvious, so im trying to rule things out one at a time, she has no history of sweet itch, although she is only 3 next month, non of her siblings or parents have ever suffered with it, but im not sure if it is an hereditary problem?

It's tricky to know isn't it? Sorry I can't be any more help because I've never dealt with sweet itch.

my mare did the same she never though was an 'itchy' mare that suffered from any sweet itch or anything! we treid creams and everything and nothing helped she rubbed nearly all her tail outand most of teh hair on her neck and bum! she ended up with the snuggy hoods sweet itch rug, although she hated being rugged she didnt seem to mind it at all maybe with it being like a suit not a rug:p

:( then welcome to the world of Sweetitch :(

I use Deosect and a good rug on my pony

:( I sincerely hope not, the reason im not convinced as yet, is because my old boy would rub his mane & tail area also, rubbed until he knocked his stable down, and after a visit from the vet as treating him for sweet itch did nothing in fact made him worse, we found he had a bacterial skin infection, once he had been clipped it became obvious there were other patches on his body, but mainly mane & tail area.

So does it need to be a rambo sweet itch hoody? or are there other good rugs out there we could try, im not sure i fancy my chances of getting her into a Boett style just at the moment, i do have a fly mesh style rug, but the neck cover is far too big for her, it ends up looking like a large snood around her neck.
