itchy pony rubbed raw - discounted obvious. please help.

My old dear is nearly 32. 15.1. Mare with arthritis, cushings and pymetra. Still in light work once a week and quite happy generally. Lately she has been very itchy. I've de loused just incase. I've cut all alfa from diet and she is groomed 2 or 3 times a week. I gave her a neck and belly clip a few weeks ago and it seemed to help. Today she has rubbed a patch by her hip raw through her rug on the stable wall. I don't know what to do with her. Left her naked with cream on the raw patch for now. Any ideas on cause and what to do? Please?
 
Except that is she susceptible to midge / mosquito bites? My husband and I both got bitten several times one night recently. Hasn't been cold enough to kill the blighters off it would appear.
 
Hi my mare rubs her hip in the summer due to sweet itch. I tape gamgee over it and get some antibiotics because it will probably get infected. Also try to get some fuciderm gel for the vet. You can also try to get rubber spikes for her to rub on without injuring herself. I can't say what the cause of your mares itchiness might be as its too cold for midges. May be an allergy to something in the field or otherwise environmental. Allergy testing might be the way to go but it is expensive.
 
Can't help but I used to help out a pony with cushings and he was getting far too hot under his rugs due to the thick fur, rubbed his neck raw and open and was eventually so itchy he wasn't balancing himself when scratching and had a fall in the stable :( could she be overheating?
 
It's not too cold for midges and mosquitos in East Anglia OP - I've no idea where you are though.

Incidentally I understand that cushings ponies have trouble regulating their heat so she may well be getting too hot rather than too cold. My own Cushings pony is often too hot although she is unrugged and hasn't got a thicker coat this year than at any other time over the 10 years I've owned her.

Just a hunch re liver, I know that liver problems can make humans itchy and I think it is the same for horses.
 
I had my gallbladder out Monday and still have some liver problems.. I cut myself to ribbons scratching due to the level of bile salts coming through my skin.. I had jaundice too..

I would imagine similar symptoms could be possible with raised liver function in horses too?
 
Mine rubbed her haunch totally raw, had skin tests done, nothing. Now she's on a different yard and it's totally gone! Only thing I can think is it was something in the field. I also give her brewers yeast so maybe that might help? It's so upsetting to see them go frantic with the itch.
 
Agree with the midges being around as saw some two weeks ago when hacking on a warm day so yes they are still around, in WINTER!
I am in Cheshire/Staffordshire btw OP.
 
I'm lincs based. No additional damage when I went back to yard so have clipped her. She's been wearing so little and I am meant to keep her dry for her joints so this way can keep waterproof on her in field. She loved being clipped despite slightly blunt blades. :$ and seems quite happy now in her thermolux. If she's still itchy tomorrow i'll get vet out to test liver.
