Hello,

Any tips or hints for helping my boy. He is incredibly itchy, he has been for a few weeks but he wintered out without a rug and so was losing a phenomenal amount of coat so I put it down to that and scrubbed him with a curry comb! His summer coat is nearly here now although he is still loosing some winter coat. However he is still very itchy particularly in his mane, on his neck, at the top of his neck and on the insides of his back legs at the top (thigh area). he has also started rubbing his tail (gah!). Although he rubs he's not doing it so much that he's going bald but I am concerned. he also sits his head on the stable door and rubs side to side to itch his throat area (where his head and neck meet). I washed his mane in Dermoline 2 weeks ago which I think helped a little but he's still doing it. I don't want to bath him all over yet as he's not rugged and I'm worried that the weather is not quite stable yet. However I think I will have to bite the bullet this weekend and bath him. I'm going to do his tail tonight.

He is a fell so very hairy, I'm using the NAF off pink fly spray and he has garlic in his feed. He is 5 and his old owners said he has never had sweet itch but has had lice once before. I have looked and can't see anything living in there. Does anyone have any recommendations for shampoos (currently using dermoline) or anti-louse treatment (I feel that might be a route to go down just to be absolutely sure).

Cheers

Mine does this all year round- including when stabled. He has rubbed himself bald at times. Now, the only solution I have, as it is not anything obvious like sweet itch or lice and tests all inconclusive, is to electric fence anywhere he can rub on, including inside the stable(luckily its a 14x14 box so is large enought to do that).
The vet did give me some kind of anti itch shampoo a couple of years back, but it made no difference what so ever!
Good luck, and I do feel for you and your boy.

Hi walrus,
I have to say that it sounds very much like Sweet Itch to me. Sorry :( It can start at any age and given that the immune system is not fully developed in humans until the teens, I can well believe that the same happens in horses. I use dermoline on my SI mare, but like you, have been concerned about the weather (that and she’s terrified of ANYTHING being put onto her, including creams of any sort, so bathing is a logistical nightmare!). In October I was sponging just her mane and tail (as that’s where all the potions go), but it should be done at least once a week. I am also trialling a home-made fly-goo, consisting of Neem Oil (100ml), Benzyl Benzoate (topped up to 500ml), eucalyptus oil (5ml) and a few drops citronella oil. Easier to handle than most liquids, cheaper and so far a darned sight more effective! Only thing is, she looks like an oil slick, so be careful if you try this on a ridden pony! I also feed her Brewer’s Yeast, linseed oil and Hi-Fi Lite, restricting her grass intake as too much of this can be a factor. She’s not itching as badly this year, but she IS rubbing a little. I won’t know how effective the treatment is until we’re beyond the moulting stage, as this isn’t helping – I’m grooming her every single day to try and ease it.
Good luck. I do use a fly rug on my girl, but am reluctant to use it while she's moulting so much as I think she'll be itchier!

Thanks guys. I am desperate for it not to be sweet itch :( He is such a lovely boy with a full mane and tail it would be so horrid. Does anyone have any experience of Boett blankets for very chunky and hairy ponies? I think he'll be being bathed at the weekend and I will carry on grooming like a maniac to get rid of his winter coat.
