Hi there, my horse has suddenly devolped a very very itchy bum for want of a better description. he is holding his tail right out to the side almost like a presenting mare and will almost knock you over to get a scratch on it ! any ideas what it could be, it doesnt look like sweet itch to me and another horse on the yard is also very itchy but all over ! got the vet coming on weds and in the meantime have been washing it and applying aloe vera and teatree which seem to help a bit. any advice most welcome

if its sweetitch it will be all over mane tail withers and rump area try and wash with hibiscrub and di itch

Mine gets itchy if she has a greasy dirty coat, as does OH's horse. Both are quite sensitive souls in terms of their skin.

maybe he is just having a good old itch! if he is not rubbing mane or tail to sore point it probally is not sweet itch. have you wormed himfor tape worms that can make there arse itchy!

Hi there, thanks for your comments, its not on his mane or anywhere else and he is bathed and wormed regually. I thought it may be an allergy but to what I have no idea, I have noticed several horses are itchy but this is more than just an itch he virtually throws himself on you if you touch it and pushes against you, what I have noticed is it is worse at the very end of the tail bone !??
The vet came today and he is on a short course of steriods and got benzyl benzoate to put on the tail but she couldnt say what it was either ! he is a very sensitive little chap , even fly bites come up like giant lumps! will have to wait and see what happens kxx
