Itchy scabby skin, help?

Hi, I am new to the forum and a new horse owner. I have had my horse about a month and fairly soon after I got him he started to be itchy.He was turning around and biting at his shoulders. This has now escalated and he is rubbing his neck on the stable door and biting at other areas of his tummy,etc. I have noticed that he has small scabs on his skin on his neck and sides. They are not on top of his back,hips or legs. He doesn't bite at his legs.Would anyone be able to tell me what might be causing this and what I could do to give him relief from the itchiness? The first thing would be to treat him for lice and/or mites. An injection of dectomax is a good start.

Many thanks for your advice, and i think mites or lice could be a very strong possibility considering his symptoms and behaviour.

My youngster got similar symptoms in summer, very itchy and rubbed hair off his face and body in patches poor thing. Vet gave me frontline spray which worked well. He mentioned an injection as well but we didn't need it in the end.
