My 7 yearold welsh section D gelding constantly wants me to itch his sheath and back end. He'll stand there for hours while I rub him and if I try and walk off he'll kick his stomach or follow me and then turn his bum on me one I stop. He is completely clean - he drops alot and enjoys it being cleaned. I don't use soap. I also can't see any signs of infection. Does anyone elses horses do this?
Thanks

Dirty old man in his pervious life?? : /
Seriously though my highland loves it when I rub his sweetitch cream into his sheath, he rubs it bad and stands and lifts his leg to the side to help me.
No help to you know :)

Are you sure there are no small maggots up there as my old tb did that and I gave the sheath a really good clean out and severl came away :(

Positive, I've stuck my hand up there everyday to check and check again, I'm wondering if he's just enjoying the rub abit TOO much!
My mums old pony used to lift his leg up and get scratched under his belly and sheath, only when my mum decided to clean it did she notice maggots coming out! So I'm very wary about the same happening to mine so I'm probably more worried than I should be

You wont see signs of infection - he would be a lot worse if you did. But he might have an imbalance of the natural bugs that live there and this would cause great itchiness. My gelding was just the same and used to lie down and scuttle back and forth to give himself a good scratch. He's an over producer of smegma so I was advised to wipe out with nothing more than plain water once a week, never to use any products or sops. You could try some natural yoghurt to see if this would recolonize the good bugs, otherwise you might need vet to take a swab to check for overgrowth of bad bug/s. Most geldings are glad of the occasional scratch but when things are abnormal - its very obvious, with manic rubbing of teeth down the stable wall!

My mare is exactly the same with her teats. She literally swings her bum round and sidles up to me with a pleading look in her eyes, going crazy if I oblige bless her! She gets a lot of fly bother there, so I cover the whole area in sudocreme or fly gel (antibacterial green gel by Lincoln is messy but really good) which she loves and I know won't make the itching worse like scratching it, and make sure to spray all the areas that get itchy as flies will obv make it worse. I also use anti itch shampoo and make sure her skin is not too dry.

I'd definitely put some soothing cream on, it sounds like your boy is uncomfortable. Nappy cream from asda and similar places is cheap and cooling.
