Can anyone recommend something topical to apply to ease itchy skin? Horse has been treated by vet for allergies but will still scrub mane and tail on occasions. (It’s not sweet itch according to vet).

DermAllay Oatmeal spray was recommended by my vet last year when horse was itchy as a result of Anaplasmosis (tick-borne disease, similar to Lyme's). Seemed to be very soothing, and I've used it since to good effect on a fly bite he'd rubbed at. Available on Amazon!

Red Horse Sweet Oil is good as is their ear balm. My mare is not easy to apply products to but she seems to really enjoy having a daily application of sweet oil on her tail.

ETA: if you want to try a supplement, Feedmark's EquiDermis is really good for supporting the skin.

EqWax do a good, easy-to-use Neem oil blend which is great for stopping itchiness in manes and tails. And also an Itchaway no rinse wash which is good for the body.

Thanks, everyone!
I've ordered some Biteback cream and some Red Horse ear balm. (I didn't even know that was a thing!)

I like the idea of the oatmeal spray too as I really rate Aveeno moisturiser for my irritated skin. I'll also look at the Itchaway no rinse stuff as I do like a bit of Slosh I the summer so this might be a good alternative.

:) It's called Ear Balm but you can use it anywhere. It's a small pot but you just need a pinch warmed up in your hands to spread it over the area, a little goes a long way. I warm up a little blob and spread it all over my mare's face and ears (obviously not in her eyes) and it seems to work really well.

We have had excellent results with Brewers Yeast added to feed. Very cheap and seems effective. Bear in mind it will take some weeks to build up in the system
