What's the best treatment you've found for itchy tails at this time of year?

I tried Equine America's treatment (can't remember name) but it smelt like barbecue sauce and didn't seem to work

Have been having some success with tea tree shampoo and liberal aloe vera application, just wondered if there was something more effective out there....

My horse seems to get dry skin in his mane and tail area. I found putting e45 lotion on helps. Especially if you can get it on early! He does have sweetitch but with his rambo hoody and e45/skin so soft treatment he rarely gets to the itchy stage now.

ets: when he gets itchy I use sudocream and it works a treat. I think it's the benzyl benzoate which does the trick but it contains a lot of zinc oxide and other helpful stuff so the skin heals quicker!

pig oil and sulpher ( an old travelers txt) it id good friend has used it on horse who has sweetitch for years and had to be hoged due to it now she has a nice (short but nice) mane to brush hehehehe

good luck

For some reason there seems to be a lot of this happening this year! Mr T never scratches etc, but he actually rubbed his tail raw the other week and is still attempting an olympic medal in this!!! I've been using Benzyl Benzoate as well as some sweet itch homeopathic tablets!

I find washing the tail in head and shoulders once a week stops our pony itching, you have to make sure you get right down to the skin.

Here comes the list of things I use...
1) Benzl Benzoate
2) Dettol
3) Black tea
Then I put a thick layer of green oils (or failing that vasoline) over the top as it literally drowns the midges and finish it off with fly repellant.

Kevin Bacon do a bar of soap - called Active Soap. You just lather it up and rub it on. Smells really fresh and doesn't leave any gunk like the lotions and creams do.
Started using it last year. My horse doesn't get sweet itch but we live near the canals and get loads of midges that make her itchy!! It's really good and one application has lasted for about 10 days before she started itching again. Lasts for ages - about £14.

Thanks for the replies all. Will try Benzyl Benzoate....have been using Coopers fly 'spray' which is very effective, so hoping that'll stop the cause.
