Hi my pony is constantly itching his tail which now looks like a semi pulled bog brush! He is a 14.3 grey connemara gelding who is 10. I've tried anti dandruff shampoo mane a tail conditioner. Has anyone got any suggestions. The vet thinks he just does it for pleasure :( any help much appreciated thanks!

My horse gets an itchy tail at the top but doesn't have sweet-itch, I use benzyl benzate (I think that is how it's spelt) ;) ;)

I bought some Avon sss for flies and found it works really well on tails too - my cob scrubs the top of his tail every summer, but since putting some on he hasn't rubbed at all.

Check under his tail for anything around his bum that might be itchy. A horse on my yard scratches the hell out of his tail because he's got scurf under his tail

Wash with a shampoo containing tea tree. When dry apply benzyl benzoate. {Which you can buy online from Hyperdrug]. I bought mine a Rambo sweet itch hoodie [even though he doesnt have sweet itch]. Stopped his itching as he cant get bitten.

Hey.
Most horses tend to scratch if they have worms, need there sheeth cleaning or have sweet itch. So i would try to find the cause of it.
If it is sweet itch teatree is brill at keeping it clean and the flies away. And once there is no more open saws you can use vinegar. A bit smelly but works wonders.
Hope this helps. X

If it isnt sweetitch and seems confined to the tail is there any possibility he could have pinworm? Mine had this and thought it was sweetitch or just enjoyed having a good scratch, then found a little white worm in his poo one day, researched it and found out pinworm can cause a lot of itchiness. They dont come up on worm counts either and a lot of wormers dont touch them so can go undetencted. Vet advised strongid-p was the only thing that would touch them, along with disinfecting everything they could have come into contact with. I gave him that and loads seemed to be coming out of his poo next day so obviously did soemthing, although whether they all go and stay gone is another matter as they are notoroiosly difficult to treat.

He's probably being bitten around his sheath, they can't scratch there so the tail gets it! Make sure you put plenty of fly spray or gel around his sheath and up under his back legs.

Hi, thanks, Kirico was my last PRE stallion and i actually sold him a few months ago. The new boy is the one in my avatar Resalado, although i dont breed from him either as he's im an amateur and he's purely for enjoyment and having fun on. Can put you in touch with numerous people near me that do have some very nice spanish breeding stallions though.

Ohh yes please!!! Where did you get your boys from? They look fab.
Could you inbox me. Thanks x

Also found avon SSS stopped mine. They don't have sweet itch but the midge bites are still irritating enough to enjoy a scratch up the wall when they come in. Stopped after using SSS.

I use 'stop itch' from leovet and then bite cream from global herbs. Petroleum jelly also helps to keep hair on if they rub as it helps glide over the skin if applied generously (and that stuff is sticky lol) but best is still a rug imo

Two things -

1st wash the tail with Nizoral - use hand hot eater and make sure the shampoo gets to the roots of the hair. Leave for 10 mins and rinse.

2nd - if the above doesn't work then worm the horse with an Ivomec based wormer.

My Clydesdale is a real tail rubber, and the Nizoral always seems to work well - tried Head and Shoulders but it didn't work

My sisters pony has sweet itch and he use to always rub his tail but she started using kill itch after she washed his tail. It is brilliant and his tail is clean and he rarely rubs it.
Hope this helps.

Same here, I've used everything and nothing stops the rubbing. Is not sweetitch though as she does it all year round.

Drives me crazy - I really wish there was something I could put on it to stop her!!!

My mare was doing this. I washed her tail very thoroughly (made sure I got right down to the dock) with Nizoral shampoo on Saturday and she hasn't rubbed it since. Keeping an eye on it but hopefully this has fixed it.
