Hello, I've been having some trouble with my mate itching her tail and bum area, the skin under the tail bone seems to be what's irritated (it's light pink and slightly flaky) I'm not sure it's the skin on the outer of her tail bone that's itchy it seems to be the skin underneath her tail that's causing her to itch. I've owned her for 9 years and never has anything like this before, we have just moved yards and it's started to happen about a month after moving. She gets wormed regular so I don't think it's pin worms. I've cleaned the tail and skin with medicated d-itch wash and then naff d-itch hydration creame but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any suggestions?

I would suspect pinworm. What have you 'regularly wormed' with? If it's moxidectin or ivermectin it could well be pinworm.

I use Equimax wormer... Should I use a top up? Would that help to get rid of it if it is pin worms ? Or if not (apologies for my ignorance, I've never delt with pin worms before) what is the process of getting rid of them?

I've posted some photos of her tail and underneath on my profile under the album 'itchy tail' if you want to take a look at what it looks like (the photos are with the hydration and d-itch cream on) any advice you all have i'd really appreciate it!

We can do a sellotape test at the lab to look for eggs. However you might want to worm with an old fashioned wormer like 5 day Panacur or Strongid P.
Don't want to be critical but I really hope you don't mean that you use Equimax at every worming? It is a dual wormer and needs to be done a maximum of twice a year to cover tapeworms. The other part of it is ivermectin which does not deal with pinworm very well.

There is more about pinworm in the notes section on our FB page (Westgate Labs) or ring and chat to someone about it. Not easy to get rid of unfortunately but not harmful to the horse's insides anyway.

No at the livery yard she's at she has equimax and a top up wormer (i can't remember the name, but can check when i go down to the yard), she doesn't have equimax at every worming. Thank you for your help i'll take a look at your Facebook page
