her cob keeps itching his bum on EVERYTHING to the extent he is buggering up the top of his tail, its looking really dry and where its flakey, it seems to itch him even more!

vet has suggested using a tail guard or bandage to get him over the inital itchyness

any recommendations on what to use as ideally its going to be on permenantly, ive been told tail bandages cant be left on for more than a few hours?

ta muchly!

My horse has an itchy tail and is a cob. . .Sometimes its like the stable is going to collapse lol

He has dermoline medicated shampoo. . .is making some difference. . .

My horse gets this but he has mild sweet itch. I use a weatherbeeta fly rug and homemade fly spray, but on his mane and tail I use killitch which works a treat. He also gets his tail washed once a week with insecticide shampoo. He's not so bad in winter.

I didnt think bandages could be left on for more than a couple of hours!

wasnt sure about tails guards tho, she's seen a few on ebay that look like they would do the job,

LOL - thanks silicis - we have no stables at the mo, but both the boys are going to their new homes soon so dont want the new stables to be used as an itching post!!

Ill look into dermoline - is it prescription only?

One of my boys used to do this but the vet recommended SWITCH. I put it on once a week, usually after I have bathed him (let him dry before applying it) for a weekend show and he has been fine this summer. I think I got it online from petmeds or nutrecare as it was cheaper than getting it from the vet! Tried Camrosa last year but it didn't work on him.

Get some Coopers Fly Repellant Plus on it, cost around £25 a bottle, kills lice/mites/used to help prevent sweat itch and other itchy problems/also used as a fly repellant.

Worth having it as a tack room essential for any of the above, so never a waste of money.

Head and Shoulders !!

Not sure if you're meant to use it on horses but it works really well to get rid of the flakey and dry skin !!

Also Leovet 'NO RUB'

Is it a gelding? Have also heard it said that a dirty sheath can cause tail rubbing.

Not trying to insinuate anyones horse has feather mites or similar (!), but my cob has just had his 1st dectomax injection as the vet says he has feather mites, which are causing a general uncomfortable itch especially in his legs (the grooms had noticed through the day when im a work him stamping etc). It is also a wormer so may be worth a go if the vet approves in case it stops his itch?

The coopers fly repellant mentioned above is defo something she should try (although is is rather potent!)

yes is stinks...no wonder it keep the flies away, it keeps my OH away (hmm perhaps thats a good thing?) from me when I've been using it, on the horse of course, not moi!

wash the sore areas in tea tree shampoo that will soothe clean and protect then apply some nettex stop itch salve it is a miceral cure you only have to apply it about three times a week due to it is water proof!

Yes I have started using stop itch, it took about a week before I noticed any difference and then my cobby boy has just stopped rubbing completely! I lathered it on for the first few days but then as babybells says, haven't had to apply it every day, its brill!

Benzyl Benzoate works a treat - if you can get it (from Chemist or vet) and rub it on the buttocks as well.
Sudocrem works well and I have just had coopers spot on off the vet which you put at the top of the tail very much like a dog or cat spot on flea treatment and that has worked - one application has lasted for two weeks now and I am just going to put it on the other horse to go to Pony Club camp.
When did you last worm?? Worms can make them itch their tails.

Chancer does this - he gets mild SI. I keep him out 24 x 7 nearly all the time, but if he is in his stable, I use a soft cotton tail guard which is on just tight enough to stay put. The equine premier one is good.

Stops him turning his amazing tail into a bog brush. Only time in summer he is in overnight is if it is very wet and he has a show the next day and he is fine with it left on.

You could try washing it and applying a fly repellant. I also found feeding Skratch and brewers yeast helps but does not completely stop him.

I also put a lycra hood on him just in case he decides to rub his mane.

Pig oil and sulphur prevents mites and can be used both on legs and tails and manes.

Our little pony does this, it's got to the stage it's tail looks like a Bog brush and it practically has no mane, We use Sweet itch lotion and put a Bug Rug on which has a long tail flap with a piece of elastic on to hold the tail in it.

Worked really well for weeks, until he learnt how to get out of his rugs, believe me it's soooo funny wen u watch him do it! he's built up a right technique!

My horse had this injection 4 years ago now, and it left a huge lump on his neck for about a year, and since then we have had loads of problems with allergies...not 100% sure its connected, but I will never use it again.
