Itchy yearling!!

I have a 1 year old fluffy teddybear gypsy vanner. He has always loved a nice skratch. As his winter coat has started to come through he has got increasingly itchy! He gets sweaty when the suns out too bless him, his coat is thick and still foal like.....

Ive parted his fur and had a good look and he is quite dusty and scurfy. He has been bathed around 3-4 weeks ago when we went to our first show so its not like hes never had a bath! I used a shampoo for black horses....He loves rolling too so always gets muddy...

I have used medicated shampoos in the past on a horse that had sweet itch that seemed to sooth but that was a while ago, although I dont think it is sweet itch......can anyone recommend a shampoo to me please?

Assuming he hasn't got lice, it could just be down to the up and down tempretures we're getting etc.

I wouldn't bath him, becuase he needs the grease in his skin going in to winter.

Try adding a drop of oil to his feed - it works wonders for the coat and skin.

Give him a real good bath using Nioral - it will cefinately help his scurfy skin.

Dilute with hand hot water and work well into the coat. No need to rinse just scrape off excess.

Ive rulled out lice, purely because he only shares a field with my other ones and they have never had them. Its been more and more with the weather change. Im just concerned if I dont bath him he will continue itching and make himself sore??

Has he been wormed correctly? some internal parasites can cause itchy coats despite having a general look of ‘good health’ from the outside, so this could be something worth looking into just in case it is causing the itching.

Lice, no shame in it and they don’t have to have caught it off another equine, we are coming up to the time of year when these little buggars start to settle in for the winter in our horses nice warm fluffy coats, so again for safe measure, treat him for lice infestation as well as any rugs, grooming equipment, stable etc, really easy just buy some Coopers Fly Repellent Plus (treats lice and other cretins) usually does the job, don’t waste your time with powders there rubbish.

Seaweed supplement is very good for itchy horses, give it a month to kick in and you’ll really notice a difference, really helps improve the skin or you could try other skin supplements that you add into the feed, I think Global Herbs do one specially for itchy sensitive skins.

Hey he is wormed very well.....egg counts taken and wormed accordingly. Was thinking to treat for lice just in case. But he doesnt seem as though he has them as I have seen a friends at another yard with them last year. ohhhhhhhh seaweed sounds good thank you

I had this with my yearling earlier on in the year and in the end i called the vet as everytime she scratched as she was so itchy she would fall over. The vet diagnosed lice which i treated, but you need to treat brushes, rugs etc too. Hope you get this sorted

Thanks for this he doesnt wear rugs so thats one easy thing. Ill grad some lice treatment tomorrow and maybe medical shampoo too?? not sure if i could shampoo first then lice treatment?

I'd do the lice powder first and follow the instrustions on the pack. If hes still itchy after youve done that then i'd proably consult your vet. I think its really too cold to be bathing a horse allover in this weather.
