In continuation from my post on Friday regarding the 7yr old pony who had put to sleep for breaking out of the field, It has now been confirmed that they did in fact Destroy the pony for this reason. A Vet was called out at 4am to put the pony to sleep.
Straight from the horses mouth!

Omg, that is awful

Sorry for your loss xx

A vet came out at 4am to put a pony to sleep because he had escaped from a field??? VERY accommodating vet - mine certainly wouldn't for anything that was non-emergency. Sounds very bizarre to me I'm afraid.

Are you friends with the vet who put the pony to sleep? Would you be able to speak to him about why he came out at 4 o'clock in the morning to put a loose pony to sleep? It's highly peculiar to say the least.

No, I dont know him, and I dont really feel its my place to question him as I had sold them the pony only two weeks previous.
Believe me i cant get it through my head and keep riding past the field expecting him to jump out from behind the bushes and shout me but hes really gone and I just feel it is such a waste of a perfectly good healthy pony. My vet also would tellme to stop wating his time at 4am and a few other choice words for dessert.
I posted this story just to make sure i wasnt overreacting, but these situations obviously do occur, never in a million years did i believe it, but I do now.

Totally crazy

. Have you told the buyers how you are feeling? And what did they have to say about the situation?

Sounds very odd to me too.

Sorry for you and the loss of a good pony. Why didnt she get back to you?

Very strange but thats not much consolation for you.

Especially as you felt you had found him a really good home.

Said they never though to ring me and now they also dont think it was the best decision!!!!!!!!! They were tired and couldnt think straight.
Rant Over!

This sounds very strange - vet at 4am? Just can't imagine that unless someone else - like the police - called. Even then... I can imagine you're feeling horrible about it.

I'm really sorry to hear about this, but if it was me I'd be asking serious questions re the vet. If there were no injuries, and no matal health issues is it morally right for a vet to PTS a fit and healthy animal? are they allowed to do this? (I ask, because I don't know). Do the RCVS have a code of conduct or something which includes anything like this?

Something about their story doesn't ring true. There is no vet in the country who would come out on emergency call out at 4am and put a prefectly healthy pony to sleep. Sorry but someone is lying.
Either the pony had colic, or got so stressed they couldn't shut it in a stable, but it doesn't ring true.
I would ask again..

HH - I do agree with you here.

Jeli - is there any way that perhaps the pony had injured himself and the owners don't want to tell you exactly what had happened to spare your feelings? I just cannot imagine a vet coming out at this time of night to do what this vet did.

Katy, it may be seen as unethical by some vets to put a perfectly healthy pony to sleep, but it may not be by other vets. I believe it is totally at their own discretion as to whether they will perform this task or not. I know that if I asked my vet to put any of mine to sleep, he would do as I ask.

How sad. I can't help thinking they're spinning you a yarn though to save your feelings or cover their bums. Surely a vet wouldn't go out at that time in the morning to put down a perfectly healthy pony?

Something just isn't right with the tale somehow. So very sorry it ended this way. If the details are correct, it's a terrible waste.

I agree, think they are telling you porkies I'm afraid.
The police WOULD have been called to a loose pony on the road and they would have opened an incident log recording what actually happened. You can apply to read this log under the Freedom to Information Act - but you will have to pay a fee.

how awful, i must say though just after i left school i worked in vet centre and was horrified to how many people bought in their healthy dogs and cats to be put to sleep purely because they couldnt be bothered with them

I can't imagine that a vet would come out at 4 am in response to a call along the lines of the pony has got out once too often and I want you to euthenase him right now (sorry to be blunt). I wonder if he was injured or there were other problems?

i think you're totally within your rights to speak to the vet and find out what happened. no horse vet who i've ever known would have done that, tbh. sedated it to keep it in for an hour till the fencing was fixed, yes. put it down for a stupid management reason, not its fault? no. i'd ring the vet, say you sold the pony to the woman 2 weeks ago, and you want the truth about what happened that night.

Jelibean - late addition to this thread coz right from the start it didn't ring true. But I thought I was being over-cynical so I shut up. I'm relieved to see other thoughts along the same lines. Has she told you the name of the vet or the practice she used? I agree - either horrendous injuries caused by ignorance and lack of foresight on their part or they've sold the pony on. Very, very sad. I'd be totally gutted.

I'm sorry, I didn't read your original thread. I do find this story incredible and very difficult to believe. I am so sorry and hope you find out the truth - because I don't think this is the whole truth.

I agree. And I agree with Katy - no vet would have put that pony down in the situation as described.

I would bet money that the pony has been sold on and she doesn't want to tell you.

Ring the practice that put the pony 'down' and ask them what happened.
