My horse is a pain, has anyone come across this scenario ??

Rewind back to 2018 - her best friend T who is a 14.2hh bay pony mare was bought a bran new fly rug. bright lime green rug, my mare took an instant dislike to it and started chasing T round and round the field grabbing at the rug and ripping it. This went on for quite a while, we even bought a zebra rug which my mare, my boy who i lost who was boss, also had zebra as did my connie mare.

The other old gelding in the field who is black has a white rug. no issue.

In the end I bought this livery a zebra rug also and it made little difference and in the end we had to put T in the other group. End of problem.

ok 2022

Now livery horse Z dark bay mare was here briefly in group 2

Bay mare Z moved next door to be with R owner

Unknown issue within neighbour yard and out of the blue horse R owner moved to us

Ok so grey mare R came on livery to us 3 months ago and my mare did a lesser version to this issue with a white rug, but she changed to zebra, and now my mare L is besties with R.

...............................................................

Then 2023

Now Both horses R and mare Z were in yard together next door so they know each other no issue

Now horse Z has to go in group 1 with my mare old horse and horse R everything was ok till this morning, when owner of Z wanted a fly rug which is pale pink and grey and I warned the owner of what could happen.

Everything was fine till about an hour ago when the contractor called me out to view his work and I saw my mare L chasing horse Z round and round like she did with T all those years ago, we took the pink rug off, and when i left all seemed quiet.
The only option is to put Z in the group 2 and livery H in group 1.

we cannot put grey mare R in group 2 as livery B did worse to horse R where horse R tried to jump 5ft fence and got legs caught so we moved horse R into group 1 with mine and horse H into group 2.

phew this is confusing me. so my question is have you ever known a horse taken an instant dislike to a horse because of the rug. I dont understand where it comes from in my horse is is a unknown her past and lots issues like trust, magnesium reactions etc work neg to her.

Our only option would be put horse Z back into group 2 where she knows horse B who was the problem and move horse H back into my group where he has been before when issue B and R happened.

I am sure I have lost most of you by now reading this.

😵‍💫🤪😵‍💫 Years ago my part bred Arab took instant dislike to 2 Welsh Sec A ponies. They had been in neighbouring fields with no problem, my boy and his bestie had been in with several different horses over the years with no problems but he took a dislike and chased these 2 ponies When they were all put together. I had to wade in and get him and his bestie out PDQ. i guess if they dislike something they react.

I walk out my big mare in a pink high viz horse walker rug. There is one horse we meet who absolutely goes nuts and starts snorting and reversing down the road. He's met her 'naked' without a problem so it's something to do with not recognising a horse under that rug.

My youngster had eyes on stalks when he first came to me and the old boy went out on day 2 with his fly rug on.

My old boy took exception to a slightly shiny fly rug on mum's old pony- but as the pony didn't want to be wearing it either he stood happily to have it shredded! 🤣 The snuggy hoods sweetitch rug was deemed acceptable by both though.
Could the livery be persuaded to swap to a different rug- perhaps borrow one to try first?

My horse full on attacked his companion once last year when he had a new purple combo turnout.
I mean it was quite scary at the time and nothing we could do to split them up. He only gave up after getting a really good kick to the jaw. Stopped him in his tracks and he was sore for a few days after.
It was the most bizarre reaction to a horse he gets on so well with and had been turned out 24/7 with no issues ever before.

Our one horse has sweet itch and wears a white sweet itch rug 24/7. Last year we put a white fly rug on her companion who is actually the boss of the two of them. Sweet itch horse went mad and attacked the other pony. Once the fly rug was removed all was peaceful again.
