Its no wonder theres so many arrogant drivers!

Tell it how it is perfect11!! The out for an afternoon ride cyclists are generally ok but the road race type and the ones who weave about through traffic are a damn nuisance!! The're an absolute menace to large vehicles as they think the're invincable!! Most wagons have a sign on the back telling cyclists not to under cut them!! There is a bloody good reason for that and if they choose to ignore it then that's there fault if they wanna get chewed up and spat out of by upto 6 axles!! And as for the numptys who cycle on the road when there's a cycle lane on the path well that's just arrogant! And most of them don't wear hi viz either!!!! I like my hi viz I'd anyone hadn't guessed

Hi viz and manners are vital when out riding. We have a large number of HGV lorry drivers close to us and we are extremely appreciative of the efforts that they make to not frighten the horses. Over the years it has been reckless car drivers frightening our horses by driving too fast and even shouting out of the car window as they pass by. The HGV drivers have been no trouble at all. My friend was however hospitalised as a result of a car driver shouting as he passed her. Anybody that has sustained injury as the result of a negligent car driver (even if he/she failed to stop and no number plate was recorded) should be aware that they are still able to make a claim for personal injury providing that it happend within the last 3 years. My firm deals with such claims on a regular basis and it is important to get the message out to both riders and road users that frightening horses on the road does not have to be tolerated. Naturally remembering manners when a car driver has taken the time to ensure your safety will encourage them to be courtious when they encounter the next horse on the road.

As an hgv driver myself thats just bloody unprofessional!! If they know theres horses in the area they should be going a little slower to be able to react in time if they meet you. Thats also a problem we all we face, being able to hear a big vehicle but knowing fine well it hasnt seen us and wont until the last minute, horrid feeling.
He obviously made his best attempts to stop but yes wagons do make alot of noise and take a hell of a lot stopping, something not all riders appriciate. But point being the driver should have more sense if its known theres horses in the area. Have you tried speaking to the company who has the wagons?

I have spoken to the manager of the haulage yard regarding two serious incidents which included being tail-gated by an HGV on my old boy around the blind bends with the HGV so close behind I could have turned and touched the windscreen with my schooling whip. Problem is the drivers continue to hammer round the blind bends too fast to stop should something like a horse be around the corner out of sight.

The problem has been further increased as the haulage yard owner is also a large landowner who previously allowed off road access from one end of the village to the other via field margins on his land. This year the field margins have been ploughed which has pushed riders back onto the village road as we have no other way to access the rights of way. On a half mile stretch it is not uncommon to be passed by 5 or 6 lorries...

The haulage yard owner is well aware of the number of riders in the area.

If you still have a problem and want to take it further contact the area traffic office asumiming you are in the eastern area, the traffic commisioner is Richard Turfit 03001239000 these people are responsble for HGV opperator licences and its conditions IE what time they can come and go, routes and all sorts of other things if they misbehave the TC can take action and even stop them running .....hope this helps ....

^^^ Exactly HOC. If riders don't bother to even nod their head if they can't take their hands off the reins then I've been known before now to stop the car, get out and say something to them. That kind of "carrot up their backside" behaviour endangers all of us riders through their selfish ignorance.

Hi viz is an absolute must for me whatever the weather and time of day. The least I can do to try to protect my horses as best as I can.

Perfect11s

Thank you for this! I will most certainly be giving them a call, I did speak to VOSA the other week to see if there were any conditions but they weren't very helpful.

The HGV traffic appears to have seriously increased in the last 18 months and a lot of non-horsey residents aren't that happy having so many HGV's thundering past their houses 24/7

You're all stuck you're own backsides!

Not EVERY rider/cyclist is obliged to THANK anyone ffs. Who do you drivers think you are??

I'm not bowing to every effin driver that bothers to slow down, not that they need to, I couldn't give two bobbers. Just give wy like you have to with any other person.

Why do drivers think they are so effin holy???

Hi-viz or not, riders, cyclists and pedestrians have every right to use a highway WITHOUT feeling inferior to DRIVERS of CARS or stupid HGVS!!!!!!!!

How about p11s off... :D when I am riding my ponio, I don't give a tosso. I make sure we are as unintrusive as possible and let traffic past, thank IF and WHEN I need to.

Courtesy, yes, but nobody OWES anybody anything on the roads I just can't understand why some drivers feel the need for gratitude. Get a life.

I drive 1000miles a week in my day job. I pass all sorts on the roads and I don't go about my day getting upset some poor cyclist or girl riding little ponio didn't dismount and curtsey at me for my enormous show of consideration by not knocking the poor idiots over.

I just give them a safe distance in order to pass or stop if needed and get on with my puny little life. Is that too much to ask? I don't think so.

You're all sad.

Monday i was driving a fully loaded artic, pulled out of the yard and was doing about 30mph, comes round a bend heres 2 horse riders coming towards me, no hi viz, 2 a breast, attempted to brake but obviously (or not as some folk seem to think a fully freighted wagon can stop as quick as a car) couldnt do it without creating noise, air breaks, gear changes etc. The horses didnt bother but one of the riders shook her head and mouthed obsenities at me.
It was a dull day and with high hedges they just werent visable enough!! You would think they would have more sense when they know they are on a road near a busy truck depot!

You'd think the truck drivers wouldn't be going round bends too fast to stop if they are used to horses in the area being round the bends.

It needs to be the law to pass horses no faster than 15mph and if drivers are unable to drop to that speed upon seeing them, they shouldn't be f-ing driving.

Hi-viz is nice and all but its hardly a force-field that can stop "fully loaded artics". I'm scared to death of riding on the roads these days and it is for one reason and one reason alone - people drive far too fast on narrow roads with high hedges, so forgive me for not kissing their/your backsides every time one of them is courteous enough to drop their speed slightly, even though they still wouldn't have a hope in hell of stopping should my horse shy or spin.

Hi-five!!!!!!! :D
