:) Thanks - I don't want to spoil your enjoyment and excitement when you've just got your new pony though. I'm a terrible worrier myself :eek:

Anyway - here are a couple of pics of our little girl who arrived a week last Friday. Connie X, 14 months. She'd not been handled and arrived in a cattle trailer! Poor gal, she was shaking with fear when she arrived, but it's amazing what routine and basic handling can do.

:) They soon get used to you - I won't be doing much with her yet as she's young, basic handling every day though. There's a lot going on here with chickens, ducks and goats and she's taking it all in her stride. Anyway, I'm not going to hijack your thread. This is the Missy thread!

Day 4:
Missy is now eating from my hand with ease, she'll happily walk over to me and eat from my hand before taking a step back. I'm hoping within the next few days she'll learn to stand still. However, she did 'lick' my hand for about 5/6 seconds this morning which is a huge step as normally it's 1/2 seconds and run. I have started stroking her muzzle and she's quite nervous about it but doesn't pull away as quick now. Still wary of other people, my stepdad tried to feed her and she wouldn't go near him sadly :( Hopefully she'll pick up in the next few days :)

I will get some video's tonight :)

DG, if she is, do you think she'd be okay carrying and delivering? Re: cob size?
 
Day 5:

I almost cried today. Missy is happy to eat from my hand but now also licks and sucks my hand if it's in a fist for a good 10 seconds! Not only this but she doesn't run off like she used to.
I had a horse savvy friend visit her today and she walked straight up to her, fed her from her hand and Missy stood rock still. What a star!!
And just to top off a very proud mummy post, I managed to give the wee one a kiss on the muzzle today! LOVE MY LITTLE ONE<3

SO is that ad from the woman you bought her from then? The headcollar on the mare with the foal looks the same as the one missy is wearing:)

That stally isn't all that heavy so that's one good thing. Did you not look at her other ads when you bought missy to see that a) she'd been running with a stallion and b) there was a rather impressive stand of ragwort.

I thought the advert for the cob was a gelding and I didn't click it as wasn't looking for a 3 year old :o and no I honestly did not see the ragwort. Think I was just going blind with that. However when I went to visit her she was on concrete and there was no ragwort whats so ever! (And the stallion wasn't with her when I went to view)

The size of the foal is apparently governed by the size of the mare, the uterus restricts the size. So 'in theory' a Shire stallion could impregnate a Shetland mare and the foal should remain a normal size until it's born. There has been some research done but I believe it was embryo transfer between Thoroughbreds and ponies so the foals would still be purebred (the mares would be surrogates essentially). I don't think any research has been done, but someone might correct me that it has been done by direct breeding - although someone might have done it or it might have happened with feral ponies of differing sizes. It's not something I would do with horses of wildly different sizes/types because big foals do occur (ask Tessybear!) and can put the mare at risk. The first horse I bought was a dales/shire cross, his dam (dales) died giving birth because he was so big. Apparently the Shire was huge. Your vet will be able to advise you best, but like I said the stallion wasn't as heavy as I thought. Don't worry about it and enjoy your pony, she's lovely :)

Have you managed to get a good look at her undercarriage yet, it might give you an idea whether she's had a foal before - which would make life easier.
