He does look very impressive! I would love to know the secret of how he gets so white!

Well it's probably not the same stuff but i have a grey show hunter and i do a lot of showing with him and i use the non- irratent vanish bars i only use that on his legs though and i use that on my M&M as he has 4 white socks

i really wish i could like Oli- i respect him for all that he has done and thought he really deserved to win but i just can't bring myself to like him.

thought Flint Curtis looked pure class in all 3 phases- gorgeous horse

I think he is great i have watched him on numerous occasions and have seen him pat the horses ,what a fuss , i also think if he hadn't been grabbed for TV inter view he would have been round flints neck giving him a hug.
I am so pleased for him and his team.

to busy galloping around the arena and whooping up the crowd.

My kids were in the arena when he came in to do his xc and as the crowd cheered he made downward hand signals to tell them to hush.

Didn't see the need for that myself ,i'm sure flint is used to a bit of noise..

When I had a lesson with him he made a big point of getting the horses rewarded for their good work ( and did tell me off for 'princess' patting :O )

Good heavens! You'd think he'd got more to think about.

I'm a notoriously critical person and and really had a go (via this forum, and by writing to BE in the hopes of getting the practice stopped) at Nicolas Touzaint last year for his hysterical galloping around the arena. I don't think OT's lap was anything like so disturbing, it was not nearly so fast, and was well under control.

I dont have a strong opinion on him either way but would say that this year he seemed a lot more mature, and it the whole way through the event it was obvious how much it meant to him

Give the guy a break for God's sake!

His horse looked like pure class in all three phases. He rode with maturity and sensitivity. In the interview on BBC he was in tears and said if Flint had not won it would have been his fault. He totally deserved to win.

What more do you lot want?

I live in the north and everytime I see him at an event he is polite and helpful....and being very nice to his horses!

Having re-watched his round on the BBC website, he did pat him when he got off him just before he was interviewed. Or you still after a pat in the actual arena?

Oh and totally understand your point, just saying he did do it eventually

Yes, I saw that he patted him just before he jumped off. I'm after a pat just after the horse has tried his heart out for him!!
I can't believe i'm still banging on about this (i know, i know) and i know he rode beautifully and maturely all week. i think it's great that he eggs the crowd on, that's brilliant for him and the sport.
i just think that a true horseman or horsewoman AUTOMATICALLY pats the horse after their round, good or bad (thinking of Mary so graciously patting King William after he'd totally let her down tbh!) and he didn't!
but, what the hell. he's improved enormously and totally deserved his victory.

Speaking of Mary King, someone's just posted some pics of Apache Sauce in the show jumping with a fluffy noseband & pelham - his head's still quite high though so perhaps he's just a tricky one

Eek, I hardly ever pat horses! I scratch their withers, rub along their manes/behind their ears, stroke necks, noses, foreheads and such, but very rarely pat them except in the service of getting them used to noise and movement especially from the saddle. I do occasionally do the "cross hand over, pat opposite side of withers" thing when pulling up from cantering/jumping but, now I think about it, very little patting. In so much as I think about it I figure they don't pat each other and horses don't need my very human expressions of approval so long as they know how I feel, which should come in many other, far more subtle ways. To be honest, I've worked with more than one "feral" horse that would head for the hills if you actually petted it. It's an acquired taste for horses anyway.

Now I've REALLY put the cat amongst the pigeons.

That said, I've admonished many, many students to pat their horses at the end of a ride/round/lesson but only because of the state of mind it engenders and because the horses have learned what it means.

Sorry, just stirring things up. I will expect censorious pm's.

(Do I still get a Gamebird point for 'censorious' even though I'm being a **** disturber?)

I totally agree TarrSteps, tbh the applause and free canter round the ring would have been reward enough for Flint, and he will be star horse on the yard for a long time to come, he knows he did well.
Oli was obviously totally over come with emotion when he came out of the ring.
I think he was v good for the sport all weekend, he got the crowd involved on all 3 days, and rode brilliantly.
