Make sure the gear box does not make any noises what so ever, mavericks (and terano's) are prone to the gear box problems, aparently it is because it has a car size gear box in a 4x4. I had one gear box went twice, my friend had a terrano same happened.
Other than that I think they are quite reliable, looks tidy enough, ask to see the service history and any past mots, make sure you find out when the cam belt was last changed as it may be due with that milage and not a cheap job.

I would try and get a mecanic to look it over but if not make sure it starts well when its cold look in the radiator if it has clean antifreeze if it has black oil or is rusty looking avoid also look in the oil filler for white sludge, check for rust underneath, give it a good run thats when a gearbox will be noisey, and make sure it drives ok dont worry about the timing belt it dosent have one!! ... oh and the best question is ... What's your best price ... haggle!! good luck..

They are a bloody nightmare to work on.Translated that means they are very expensive to work on .EG Gearbox out to change a starter motor.I wouldnt even consider towing a horse with the SWB version. The handling is that bad.They are fantastic off road however. They rust quickly below the seatbelt anchorages .The heating /ventilation system is a constant balancing act between a misted up hothouse and freezing cold. 28 mpg tops.

I wasn't even aware they were capable of towing - more of a big car than a workhorse.

I had a LWB maverick and loved it.It towed amazingly well with a tow capacity of 3.2 tonnes and the handling was great.It also did 34mpg which is more than my car does. Mine was a little newer than the one you are going to view so it does pay to shop around for them as I paid a little more than that for a 3 years younger model. It drives very much like a car rather than a big 4x4 and always started first time even after not driving it for a week.Mine was the 3ltre diesel model. I can't remember now what I was told to look for on them but if you do a google search for Maverick reviews you should be able to find the info you need as that is what I did.

i loved my lwb maverick
sadly it needed a new clutch and nobody even wanted to quote me on it
let alone do it........as they are very tricky to work on :{
i scrapped it .

ahh so it dosn't! Me and my memory, mine was an L reg so I have had a few cars since them although only one lot more reliable 4x4. I was put of mavericks for life each gear box change cost over 2k! Warned my friend she did not take heed and got stung too. In fairness in my case the gear box only went when I towed off road, if you avoid heavy towing situations bar the transmission problems it was a very reliable car.
