I think it's time for my 9 hand high, 42 year old faithful little shetland to be pts. I have had Abigail for the last 12 years - she has never been sick or sorry and has been a fantastic companion to my riding horse I used to keep at home. A lovely little pony who was 'rescued' at the age of 28 when the breeder who had her was going to have her shot as she could no longer have foals.
I have just discovered a v. nasty looking lump under her tail about the size of a 'small' tennis ball and her breathing seems quick and shallow.
I know this is to be expected with a pony of her great age but somehow you think they will go on forever. I can't let her just deteriorate so I think I will have to make that phone call.
Sorry for depressing post but am in shock and writing it down makes me feel better.
