I think it's time for my 9 hand high, 42 year old faithful little shetland to be pts. I have had Abigail for the last 12 years - she has never been sick or sorry and has been a fantastic companion to my riding horse I used to keep at home. A lovely little pony who was 'rescued' at the age of 28 when the breeder who had her was going to have her shot as she could no longer have foals.

I have just discovered a v. nasty looking lump under her tail about the size of a 'small' tennis ball and her breathing seems quick and shallow.

I know this is to be expected with a pony of her great age but somehow you think they will go on forever. I can't let her just deteriorate so I think I will have to make that phone call.

Sorry for depressing post but am in shock and writing it down makes me feel better.

Youve saved her from being shot, youve given her 12 years that she would not have had! You could not have done anymore, I know it is a horrible thing to think of but you have given Abigail the best life she could have

Sorry to hear this

42 is a very good age. Its nice to know you gave her many more happy years after someone was going to have her to pts once she was no use to them.

Oh poor you

It's the time we all dread and having gone through it recently myself I fully understand how torn and upset you're feeling

You're doing the best thing by your little one - I wish you well and hope the sun shines for her one last time.

So sorry to read your post. It must be a terrible decision fro you to make. Unfortunately as responsible owners we owe it to our animals to make sure that they don't suffer when the time comes. I know how hard it will be for you, I have had three of my pets PTS in the last two years and the final dog who is 15 is on borrowed time .

Your little shetland has lived a very long time and you must have given her a lovely home to live out her old age happily in and it is a testament to your care that she has reached such a good age!

My very best wishes and hugs to you at this awfully hard time xxxx

Sending huge hugs your way. It is heartbreaking to make that decision but thanks to you she has had a wonderful 12 years.

((((hugs))))) x

((((((hugs)))))))))
It is called the kindest thing for a reason. But you gave her a lovely retirement and what an age to reach when 12 years ago she was going to be shot just because she could no longer have foals. I'm shore she is grateful for what you have done for her and the fact that you are not going to let her suffer. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

huge hugs to you both.... but well done for keeping her happy for so long, and also for being brave enough to make the decision.

Look up the poem Rainbow Bridge in a few days, it may help.

Love SM

I am so sorry but as a previous poster said, you gave her 12 years she may not have had otherwise. She's had a long and happy life and you can choose how she goes. She's a lucky girl to live and die with love. best wishes. xx

Its the time all of us with older horses dread, but she has had 12yrs of TLC and thats something to be proud of, alot of people like the breeder, wouldnt have bothered once she was no use.

Very sorry to read this you must be very sad - but what an age and how well she must have been cared for in her last 12 years. Even now you are doing the best thing possible. (((hugs))) to you and(((vibes))) for a peaceful end for her x

How lucky she was to have found you and you must have looked after her amazingly well for her to have lived to such a grand old age. Having just had a pony put to sleep myself I know how hard this decision is to make. After the devastating sadness you will look back and know that you have done not only the right thing but the kindest.
