And i normally stick to Soapbox! :o
How much would you say it costs to keep a Dartmoor Hill Pony per month?

I'm currently horse-less and whilst i can't afford a horse (as in something a suitable size for me to ride), i'm thinking of rehoming a Darty foal.

The livery yard i kept my previous horse at is £15 a week for a stable and grazing DIY.

Because it's been nearly 4 years since i had a horse, i'm not sure how much stuff costs now!

What would i be looking at for hay, straw, feed (not that it would be likely to need much, was thinking something like Alfa-A and nuts, this would be pretty much just to give any supplements and help with handling), insurance, wormers etc?

I have a section a so similar size.

Livery - same as any other horse never found anywhere with a reduction for ponies!
Hay - currently £5-£6 a bale here might be cheaper elsewhere though :o
Straw - £2- £3 a bale
Feed - mines on fast fibre which is £10 ish a bag and lasts 2-3 weeks and cheap nuts for her treat ball which are about £7 a bag
Insurance - somewhere around £20 a month
Wormers - again around £20
Farrier is the same as any other horse so £25 for a trim

The only thing you save money on really is feed/hay. Everything else is the same price regardless of the size of the horse!

We have two Dartmoor Hill Ponies and they are brilliant. We have our own paddocks and stables so they cost very little to keep. Super temperaments. They were unhandled when they arrived but now follow me around like dogs and let me do anything to them. Settled down within the first week, no trouble at all.

Hay here is £3.50 but not the best we have ever had. I go through 2/3 a week with night-time stabling.

Straw is £3 a bale. I go through one a week... deep littered.

I do FEC's as it saves on worming costs and better for killing worms!

Insurance... can't remember. I pay upfront so about £300/pa? You get a great discount by paying upfront usually.

Vets... well depends what your excess is. Mine is £125.

Teeth... £100/pa £50 per visit from EDT.

You wont need rugs so thats good.

Depending if you want to keep it barefoot or shod, shoes will cost around £70 a set. Never known discounts for ponies!
