I've been having a think about what I really want to achieve this year with my horse. And I've come up with the following:

I want to take him out of working livery and put him on DIY Livery!

Easy right? hmm not so much :S Firstly I live 12miles away from the stables (on a good day it takes only 20mins to get up, on a bad day it can take anything from 45mins to an hour!). However moving is not really an option for me. He is so settled where he is and I must say -so am I!

I put him on working livery because I was always only able to be up once during the week and then Saturday and Sunday (I was in school, mum and dad had work). However now I can drive I've been able to get up more often

Yet I'm still not able to get up everyday because I don't have my own car- currently using Mum's! Once my exams finish (18th June) I'll be looking for a job which I will hopefully be able to keep through University next year. Eventually, with much saving(!), I should be able to find a car willing to trot me about the place...

However, until then I won't be able to get up everyday...soo the only thing I've come up with is getting a part loaner/sharer for him? It is not ideal but I feel it's better than having any number of different riders on him each week.

I would still like to be full owner... with perhaps a split livery bill!?

So my question really, is do you think this is a good idea and have any of you heard of such a thing before?? Also if anyone has any idea of how the whole money (livery, insurance etc) thing would be done I'd appreciate any info!

Chocs, wine, vodka- whatever you want for getting thus far!

Having a sharer seems a god idea because then he will only be ridden by you and the sharer. If they ride for say 50% of the time they would share 50% of the cost. However this may not extend to 50% of the insurance bills. If you do not have regular access to a car however diy may prove very difficult. If the yard is able to offer services this would help but will obviously have cost implications.
 
Well the yard does offer to bring them in/put them out, put their brekkie in, do their hay---but you're right there are costs!

DIY at the yard IS more expensive than working livery but it'd be better for him, for me I think...he's 18yo now and has been ridden by all really since his younger days (was in a holiday centre and then a riding school before I got him).

I also think he'll come on sooo much if he has even less people riding him. He has come on a lot even just with me (he's got riding school pony mode where he bombs off everywhere, and private pony mode where he's responsive with just a FEW bad habits lol!)
 
I think you'd be able to find a sharer fairly easily, possibly one of the people who rides him at the moment. You would need to be definite about which days you could get up though, and would prob need to pay the yard to turn him out in the morning. Cost-wise, you need to ask your yard how much they charge for DIY, then work out feed, bedding etc on top of that.
 
Dont know if this works but how about DIY the days you can ride and get to the yard then days you cant ride have the yard do him but give him them days off so only you are riding him - hope that makes sense!!
 
So DIY the days I can ride---and put him on working livery on the riding schools' days off? lol sneaky :P They only have Mondays off though and I think it may be too complicated for them to go for it!

Does whoever pays for him now agree with paying more if you go to DIY if your sharer doesn't pay up/you have a gap between sharers?

If you get a sharer, it sounds like they'll be doing him say three days during the week, then you'll be around at weekends and maybe able to do two days during the week: a sharer may well want one day at the weekend, especially if paying half the costs.

:P I've talked to him before about going on DIY and he's always open to suggestions as long as I go to him with ALL the info (that's how I got ponio in the first place lol!)

So I'll be doing more research later when I go up- like finding out costs etc. Then I'll have to come up with an 'positive argument' for a pricier livery bill....lol

I told Dad that once I get a job I'll pay for farrier and supplements...but if we go to DIY I may have to extend that to farrier and feed- bedding and hay if I can...

But is it heard of to have a sharer who doesn't have ownership? Like a person who 'loans' him but I ride him too??
 
Yup, as I understand it, a Loaner is somone who effectively has full care of the horse (and often at a different yard/part of the county); a Sharer is someone who does that, 'shares' the horse with the owner - pays for some part of the costs (normally, some don't) and has x days on which they take care of the ned and ride, etc.
