... when a foal is born and they have something in the mouth, if you're lucky enough to be able to get it out it's like a charm? It's driving me mad as I've forgotten what it's called!

Lol! It's part of the aging process that you forget words Get used to it as it only gets worse the older you get!

I've always called it milt, I've not heard it called foal bread before

Hippomane here. Someone called it a "second tongue" to me yesterday...

They're far more common than people think - lots of luck for everyone!

I still have my foals 'foal bread' I think it was traditionally nailed to the stable door for good luck, and when it has 'dried out' the foal is meant to be waterproof!

Don't know what to do with it, can't bear to throw it out!

Its name as mentioned above is the "hippomane" however we call it the "cud". We leave it to dry out in the bars of our stables and they eventually disappear!!!!!!!
