I've got to go back on the lunge!

I had a lesson today and my instructor has suggested that next week's lesson takes place on the lunge. She says that it will give me chance to practise my sitting trot postion without my pony unhelpfully speeding up into a ragged, bouncy trot every time I put the reins into one hand and take away my stirrups.

I feel a bit of a twit but I am sure that it will do me good to get back to basics. I have had back problems for several years and I think that my lower back has become far too rigid and is not absorbing the movement as it should.

Has anyone else had to go back on the lunge after riding for years or is it just me?

At college we ride on the lunge once every 2 weeks! it does not matter what level you are riding on the lunge can really help improve your position! i have troble sitting deep into a saddle and by havin lunge lesson i can concentrate on my self rather then the horse!! i would really recommend them!

hope that helps

Thanks for that. I know in my heart that it will help me but I just felt a bit cross with myself that my riding seems to have deteriorated as I've got older. I never used to have any problems before my back injury you see.

I love having lunge lessons. I get to really concentrate on myself for once and can totally forget about the horse. It doesn't mean you're getting worse necessarily, it may mean you're just progressing to where you need to concentrate either on something new, or re-establishing the basics (I find once I get so far along with something new, for example lateral work, I forget how to ride in a straight line!)
You're certainly not a twit!

Relax and enjoy it....

I ain't exactly a beginner or a spring chicken, however I enjoy a lesson on the lunge every now and then, on a regular basis.
It's nice to be able to concentrate on all them basic things and have a few moments to think about what your doing and how your doing it!

Gotta admit, some of the kids find it pretty funny.... can't grasp why I enjoy going back on a lunge, then have the cheek to ask how a guy can stand in the trot for THAT long!!

I go back on the lunge occasionally and I really enjoy it. Gives you a chance to really concentrate on yourself without having to worry what the horse is doing.

I don’t think lunge lessons are just for beginners.
Nothing better than cantering around with no reins or stirrups, you really get to 'feel' the movement!

Thanks everyone. I am starting to feel ok about it now. My instructor has taught me a lot in the last 6 months and I feel sure that, overall, my riding has improved so I won't see this as a backward step. I think I will probably enjoy it, especially if I know that it is helping me to develop a deeper seat.

I have a lesson on the lunge once a month because it makes me concentrate on my postion and because I enjoy them. Don't feel embaressed cos you'll get a lot out of it

Lunge lessons are great. I'd have them, and I'm qualified to teach. The Spanish Riding School reputedly do a lot of work on the lunge too.
You're lucky you have such a good instructor, tbh.

I love going on the lunge and try to have a lesson every now and then, really gets you to concentrate on your seat and position rather than concentrating on the horse
