Sorry to hear about your injuries.

How about a Morgan? - a real horse, not a pony, but has a "can do" attitude and will do anything that the owner wants to do today, will turn a hoof to anything. Different breeding can make some "hotter" than others, but most are sensible, people friendly, intelligent. Only problem is finding one - the owners love them so much that older horses are seldom for sale, so you would have to look for a youngster.
 
So sorry about your knees, but doctor's aren't always right. I have had several operations on both my knees and was told that I would need one new one at least due to severe osteo-arthritis. However, I have kept fit and, touch wood, they are both still going strong. I am 58. Keeping the supporting muscles strong helps. Good luck with your horse search.
 
That's crap about the knees but hopefully you'll prove them wrong. My first thoughts horse wise are Peruvian Pasos. Another gaited horse and they have the most amazing pace!
