So I have in the end decided to have a go at getting Hovis' diaries published, so packaged everything up and sent it off to an agent..... and got my first "no thanks" this morning.

Ah well will keep trying but i think the extent of Hovis' fame may remain confined to this forum!

You cant let on to Hovis about this, his ego will never be the same.
Best you try somewhere else til they say yes & then tell Hovis that it was accepted by the 1st one.

Are you trying small agents? I think you stand a much better chance, rather than with larger ones.

And also , specialist ones........

Don't give up. It takes a lot of hard work. I love Hovis' diary. It's very funny and really well written.

Could you approach some horsey mags and maybe do a weekly diary through them as well as keeping trying for a book deal?

Good luck though - I love the diary and have fallen in love with Hovis too!

Is it not Hovis's diaries? Rather than Hovis'

Irrelevant point - either way, good luck and good on you for trying.

No, when a name ends with 's' you don't add an extra 's' for the 'belonging'.

Mayflower's

Hovis'

Charlie's

Bayliss'

That is not true IMO. It would be thomas's, james's etc.
You only drop the extra 's' if it is a plural.

99% sure I am right but I will go and look it up anyway

Hey come on, its your FIRST no, its not like its your 10th or 20th 'no', never never give up, so pick yourself up and get posting it out to as many agents as possible, you have nothing to loose and everyone's support

no, "Hovis' diary" is correct. words ending in s do not have an extra s added, as it sounds awkward to pronounce. the apostrophe is enough to designate possession, just as it is when adding after the s of a plural.
e.g. the dogs were wagging their tails = the dogs' tails were wagging. not "the dogs's tails were wagging"!!

Nope Kerilli I still think you are wrong.

Dogs' is dogs' because there is more than one dog.
as far as I am aware, there is only one Hovis.

ETA - I looked it up and I am correct in the traditional manner BUT in cases where it sounds awkward - it is possible to write without the extra s...

Please don't give up, I know it must be gutting to be told "no" but as others have said, many top publishers have been rejected loads of times. I know it all takes up your time but please try a few more, hopefully someone will appreciate Hovis' talents as we all do, he is such a wit sometimes, and no, there is no T in wit

I work in editing. Technically Mayflower is right, you should only go for an apostrophe on its own when it's at the end of a pural. Any proper noun that ends in an "s" should have an " 's " after it. However it has become common usage for the apostrophe to be used on its own after proper nouns ending in "s" so both are now acceptable.

Look in HHO New Lounge 2 on a Friday! Hovis' Friday Diary is just brilliant. I won't give away all the details but it is so funny that it is guaranteed to brighten your Friday. It is, however, addictive!

You can't give up at the first no - that would be silly.

You've got the big red book now I presume so look for specialist agents rather than those 'attached' to big publishing houses.

And, what was said above about maybe trying to get a column somewhere first is a fab idea

If you need help then PM me....

Well, if we're going for English language in general, then I should point out that it's actually "grammar"!!!!
smile.gif

Seriously though - Hovis would be so disappointed if he doesn't have his diary published (as would we!!)

I own a tack shop and am very interested in selling Hovis' diary when it is published
grin.gif
Please keep me posted. You could always try a printing house and you get the first few printed yourself, sell to the trade and then wait for a publisher???

I haven't read all the replies so sorry if this has already been suggested but have you contacted any horse magazines?

I think it would be a great monthly feature that is certain to make people laugh, especially as all the magazines tend to be quite serious. What about approaching the magazine that you have featured in before (Sorry if I have the wrong person

)?

How EXCITING!!!! Hovis' diary (I like it without the extra s) in print... Good luck and let us know when it gets accepted!
