I keep two of my gorgeous 4-legged creatures at home, I don't have horsey parents/family, I do all the work myself

I am off to uni end of September so my problems begin

I have had them nearly 11 years, adore them, one is nearly 30 a little tempermental but lovely

the other sadly has arthritis in her front legs

and is 16yo, a total sweetie! It would break my heart to sell them and think it would be unfair on them considering their age/condition.

Loaning scares me in the sense of will i ever see them again? I know you can draw up loan agreements but not everyone sticks to them? I would be worried if they were being looked after properly

I could leave them at home and pay someone to come in and check rugs feed etc but then what if said person suddenly stops coming? plus I'd have to find extra cash to pay them!

Thirdly, they could live out with no field shelter in my Dad's fields at his house but I don't get on well with him at all . We have gone 18 months without any contact before!

Most of our land is rented so once I give up the fields, I can't go back

On the other hand, I could live at home (instead of living near uni) and keep them

but then I miss out on uni life etc

It is making me feel all teary already!

Most loaners are good, Work out a part time share/loan?

Either way, if you choose to loan or share make sure you and the other person has a written contract.

ETS, where abouts are you? Pm me if yould prefer.

i lived at home all through uni and to be honest i didnt really feel like i missed out ... you will make friends with people who live there so when you want a night out you could sort your horses then stay with your new friends?? to be honest the first while of year 1 is crazy with people going out all the time.... then it does kind of fizzle out a bit. Good luck with your decision

At their age and with their problems I think you should work out a way to keep them. Perhaps look round for a good retirement livery place?
Or stay at home, you can still indulge in some uni life but your horses are only here once.

Maybe you should look into a retirement livery place for them. I dont believe its necessarily that expensive - I am sure there was a post not so long ago about someone finding a lovely place for their horse. Might be worth posting on HHO to ask for info?

You could also look at loaning - there are nice loaners out there and its worth a try. Their age is not an issue for loaning as a companion - I took a 28 year old conny on loan as a companion at one point, she lived with me until she died of old age at 34 and was the sweetest horse. She nannied a pair of yearlings I had at the time and kept them on the straight and narrow! I am sure there are options out there, but think you need to look into them soon!

i live at home and am at uni. You don't miss out on anything, you make friends no problem and if you want to go out for the night just stay with some friends. I don't fid I miss out atall and I still get to look after my horses. I think you should seriously consider this option.

I didn't live near uni - 35 miles away in fact - and I really feel I had a better time because of it. Less pressure to join in everything from running round the quad naked, drinking shots every 10 metres, to safer sex balls. I was picky about what I went to and slummed it with friends on nights I chose to go out. I had a much more pleasant time as I was able to keep up the hobby I enjoy most, which is not drinking - it's my horses!
