I haven't been over for a few week with everything that has been going on... I have really missed him and was dying to see him

When we got there the owner of the stud said they were all in the pen and to go and try his new rug on him (she had emailed me earlier in the week to ask for a stable rug for him because he was feeling the cold a lot). I went in the pen with him, two pony colts, his best friend Louis and a new filly who had only gone in with them this morning. They were all a bit hyped up because the new one was still a bit nervy, and Troy was an absolute bugger to catch because the others are quite nervy about people and were all running around me

I felt that he had be come nervous of people by learning from the others so felt a bit upset, but just kept following him and when I got near him I scratched his bottom, then moved up to his neck and put on the head collar. This took about three minutes in total after me going in.

As soon as he had the head collar in, he just stood and let me faff about with him. I took off his turnout, put on his new stable rug and adjusted it. He never moved a muscle. I then picked all four feet up and again, he just stood completely still Just to see whether he could remember his halter training, I asked him to come forwards, backwards, sideways and he just did everything and then had lots of cuddles.

He is still as affectionate as he was when he went away, but has grown up so much while he is away. I let him go and recaught him several times and he was no trouble at all the second time so I just think it is something he has copied from the others without actually knowing why he is doing it

I took some pictures with my Dad's camera, so when he emails them over to me you can see him in his new rug

I am so pleased with him... he looks a bit fluffy and scruffy, but he is turning into a lovely looking colt, if a bit too pretty for a colt And when he was trotting around the pen he looked absolutely gorgeous, I can't wait to get him in an indoor and do some free schooling work with him. I would love to see him open up

It's amazing how they remember all of the handling you do with them at young age isn't it?

I have to admit my 2 have been a bit neglected over the last 2 weeks (been very hectic building the yard), they see me everyday 2/3 times but not really handled. Went in with them today, put headcollars straight on and picked their feet up and lead them about....no problems, they did it like pros

I think handling them young correctly sets them up for life.

So where are the pics?

My Dad's camera cords are all at the office, so you will have to wait a few days I am afraid.

I have had a few glasses of wine tonight and the tears started rolling, I have to admit, because I miss him so bloody much!!! I can't wait to have him with me every day, but at the moment I know he is the best possible place for him. The owner of the stud said there is no way he would live out in the winter because he is not very good with the cold and the wet, he never has been to be honest, so I know that being in a barn with the others at night and out in the day is just perfect for a colt who is growing up!

Yes it is. It is sooo worth handling them early and they never appear to forget any of the things you have taught them.

Troy had not forgotten a thing... I was so pleased because I spent a lot of time halter training him (with the guidance of Richard Maxwell) and did worry that I would have to reestablish all the boundaries. But they were all very much there today which made me grin from ear to ear

They're terrific aren't they. Looking forward to seeing him in his fluffy winter coat - all my babies look like little polar bears right now.
