Well some people may remember my last post about my mental mare i was getting back into work after her injury...and well ive had to make a huge decision about her.

Everytime i have got on her since her coming back sound i have fallen off, and everytime lunge her she goes mental and gallops off. And yesterday i lunged her and she just went mental, worse than ever before, i have terrible rope burn on my hands now from trying to hold onto her!!

Well after discussions wth my parents theyve decided shes too dangerous for me to ride anymore, and she needs an experienced rider to bring her back into work. We dont have the money anymore to send her away to be re-schooled so theres only one option..she goes...

Weve talked about loaning her out to an experienced person as a project, as i believe she will turn back into the wonderful horse she once was before her injury. But im not sure if anyone would take her on with her being mental and all that!!

I dont think we could sell her really, whos going to want a 16.2 mare that has just recovered from a ligament injury, that is a lil mental when schooling?!!

Or she goes to redwings or that kind of place as a potential companion horse, shes lovely and kind on the ground, she just gets over excited when worked. This sounds like a good idea to me, but i just think shell be wasted there, she could make somone a lovely horse wth some time, patience and experience. Im just not experienced enough to deal with her.

Any ideas or help?! This has been a very difficult decision for me, ive had 3yrs of great fun with her before her injury and ive spend a year getting her over the injury...i love her to pieces..

Sorry for the ramble!

I really feel for you as I have one like this. I don't think Redwings or a charity will take her as they are overloaded already. Mine is a field ornament as i have my own yard but when I'm struggling with him I often wish he would drop dead. I don't want him but can't PTS a healthy horse. I feel trapped sometimes.

It is worth having a look at www.projecthorses.co.uk People put ads on there to loan or sell horses who have issues. It is a difficult decision for you but I am sure it is the right one. A loan or sale would be good but I think you will find a lot of the charities are full to bursting and are not taking on any more horses at the moment. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Do you think that someone would buy her in her state? Theres always the potential for her ligament not to hold, and she be lame again, but only time and work will tell...so im a bit unsure on whether or not someone would buy her...

Im currently at uni..going into my last year and then hopefully doing a masters, so have 2 years left, i was thinking wth a loan i have the potential to have her back when ive finished uni?!

I just want it all to be sorted!! It was heartbreaking this morning going out to muck her out, shes so loveable!!

I've just bought a 'project horse' who was/is prone to bucking. Her previous owner fell off her several times and was frightened by her especially as she's 16.2hh

but we're getting on great with her

I think there are people out there who would love to take yours on as a 'project' - just be sure she's in the right hands to prevent her being sold on etc.

What about these people: they advertise on Project Horse:

Ref 1317: Registered charity for ex-racehorses offers homes to unwanted Thoroughbreds - Shropshire

The Midland Racehorse Care Centre - reg charity (1115226) takes in and retrains and rehomes ex-racehorses. We have years of experience retraining racehorses. The horses must be able to be ridden but we'll take in horses with behavioural problems. We have hundreds of people on our books waiting to rehome. So if you are at the end of your tether give us a call and give your horse a new lease of life. Check us out on www.midlandracehorsecarecentre.org.uk

I'm in a similar situation. I have an 8 year old mare who has come sound after collateral ligament injuries and should really have been worked by now to see how she stands up to it, but she's a dangerous ride. The only difference is she's been difficult since I bought her and I don't know how old her injuries are. She's not suitable for me because I can no longer jump due to my back injury (which she's not helped by repeatedly throwing me!) and she is absolutely not hackable because her vice is bolting. I can't sell her because her feet are uninsurable, she's highly likely to re-injure, I'd worry about her hurting someone and I'd worry about where she ended up.

The options I've come up with are (not they all are ideal or might apply to you)...
- keep as a pet
- keep and keep trying to ride it
- keep and breed from it
- try to find a desperate nutter to loan it.

- re-home as a broodmare
- re-home for embryo transfer
- blood bank
- pts

It sounds like you've still got a difficult decision to make. Good luck with it.

Smurphy - shes currently turned out at night, and in during the day, she gets really badly effected by horse flies, and her eyes get swollen and imflammed, so weve found keeping her in during hot weather helps as she gets less agitated.

Flame - Thanks for all your suggestions!! I want to keep her as a companion for the other family horse, as we keep the 2 at home, however im at uni so cant look after her, shes not a horse you can leave in the field 24/7, she hates it!! And my mum and dad are fed up off working long hours and then mucking out a horse that isnt of any use...
What do you mean about embryo transfer?! I have thought about sending her as a broodmare as she has goood bloodlines...maybe that will keep her occupied!!
