Can anyone reccommend a syringe based calmer that works?
Clipping the new mare tomorrow and she's ever so nervy at the best of times. I want to make it as stress free as possible for her (and as easy as possible for me)
Oxy shot? ...Is that any good? I just want something I can wack into her gob an hour or so before to take the edge of a bit?
Does anything like this actually exist?
 
Sedalin. If something works it generally requires prescription from the vet!
Imho a calmer may help to take the edge off a horse which isnt overly stressed but clipping is a stressful situation so I doubt any of the shop bought things will be much use.
 
This really depends on how much calming you need. My nervous pony has to have the full works as I haven't found anything 'off the shelf' that works well enough. I use sedalin or complete sedation from my vet. If anyone has found something off the shelf that works the same I'd love to know.

...Im hoping I wont have to go that far. Tbh, I think she'll cope fine with a twitch and a few kind words - I just sort of wanted to make it as nice as I could for her.

Either way - I'll report back tomorrow.
 
Can we have a update please our new mare who apparently has been clipped before threw a wobbly when I tried to clip.I have sedalin on standby but would love to do it without ,like yours she nervous and anxious.

Totally agree with this. Clipping is a dangerous thing to do so don't faff around with a "calmer", get some proper stuff. I got knocked down a while ago whilst holding a mare nervous of clippers, and she was only twitched. Ok stupid me was stood on the opposite side of the horse to the person with the clippers (so when the mare reared away from them she landed on me

) so it was partly my own fault, but I'd never mess around with clipping again. Get some Sedalin and wear a hat!!
 
Valerian works, but shouldn't be used if you're competing. I've found Wendals Calmer (which has valerian in) is great - but you do have to give more than the normal "everyday" dose, because that's designed to take the edge off when you're riding them, rather than for clipping/shoeing or similar. Two scoops a couple of hours before you clip ought to do the trick - worked for me when needed and meant I could leave the sedalin in the drawer. In general, though, it is something I would rather introduce gradually to see how much it affects them before deciding what the appropriate dose would be.
 
Sadly the only way I can make it a 'pleasant experience' for this pony (and for me to stay in one piece!) is to give him sedalin or knock him out completely. It comes from years of abuse by previous owners. Now its all over without pain for either of us.

I tried valerian on him and despite upping the dose it had no effect what so ever. Wish it did as I've just got the vets bill for the sedation OUCH!
 
I have been using sedalin or sedazine for years to clip my mare, fantastic stuff. I have often toyed with the idea of not using it, but I dont clip her myself I pay someone to do it, so for their sake I still use it.
I used to get the vet to sedate her, until I found out about sedalin etc, so much easier and cheaper.
I would go for sedation over a calmer to be honest esp for a nevy new one!
