I've tried a gelding but can't say I'll rush the idea of it again.

see i like my men ;) even my stallion behaves better than most mares i have met and my gelding well, anything that i dont like about him are my fault anyway as we have had him since he was 2 years old and before that he was unhandled :o mares on the other hand i have only met a couple who dont turn into complete witches when in season or who arent always like it... i like my horses even tempered :)

I have more mares than geldings for a reason! My mares are terrific! Once you get that bond going with them they'll do pretty much anything for you, however my geldings are pretty biddable too although they require a bit more encouragement at times. The girls are all very confident and I am much more fond of my girls than my boys but then I've always been a confirmed mare-lover :)

My horse is a mare, she picks and chooses her days to be cuddly but it is a rarity. She is pretty bombproof unless shes fresh, though even then shes not bad just has a good look at things and does a few bambi impressions at things that jump out on her  Once she's done a bit of work she's great to hack! Schooling on the other hand ... Shes clever and goes through every trick to get out of working properly, if nothing is working a loud, angry grunt and a rear whilst shaking her head sometimes does! Though I got better at dealing with that :) but when she works properly she is so rewarding because you know you've had to ride her well to get a good tune out of her :)
At work I always say I dont like fillies but then I always get a favourite! Normally the little ratty ones :p but I do find the geldings more cuddly, colts are cuddly too but I'm wary of them as sometimes theyre trying to rape you :o

So I dont think you can judge on gender, it's down to the individual horse and they all have their pros and cons!

I like both, and we have one of each. My mare is a strop-bag that doesn't like fuss or cuddles, but gets on with life. The gelding is a goofball that is 90% very laid back. I think he is actually more talented than her, but he only ever gives 80% (and thats if you make him) whereas she always gives 110% willingly, but you have to have a bond with her, and if you don't she will pour scorn and contempt down on you from a great height!

I would quite happily have either, but most of my fave horses throughout my life were mares. I also like the challenge of working them out and getting that bond. I'm not saying all geldings are push button, just differently challenging in an easier way!

I adore mares and always have one as my first riding horse. However, have a gelding too who is very special, loyal and wise in a silent way.

The main difference I've noticed is that the mares are conversationalists, they want to tell you things and want you to be aware that they have a sense of self and can be trusted to be part of decision making.
The boys seem to be happy for a quiet life, tell 'em what you want and as long as they understand, they'll get on with it, as cooperation makes tea time come quicker.

Im a mare person now. My first horse was a gelding and I found he didnt have a personality (apart from biting and kicking) but my mare ooozes personality. She is a typical chestnut mare and you never pick a fight with her as she will win but when she gives, she gives big and is a pleasure to own.
