Can't believe we have had this mare so long, and finally got to say she has completed her first NOVICE event.....

In previous seasons her and OH have got their eye in at PN in the spring season, then eventing mostly stops here from May to July so she gets massively fat, then the ground gets hard, and her season peters out with a wet sort of a splosh without having achieved very much.

This year though...
-max of 8 hours grass a day and strip grazed to keep tummy in trim
-OH and I didn't go away so she didn't get 10 days in the field porking out
-did lots of unaff derbies etc to keep their eye in
-weather bad so the ground hasn't got too hard

So lets go...

Had a bit of a panic during the week (reality set in I think), so bullied OH to go to local evening SJ.

They jumped a nice round in the 1m class, then they very kindly set up a 1.10 course for us (even though there were no other entries), and they jumped round really nicely (4 faults at the very last fence

(sorry they are a little dark - it was about 9.30 by this stage)

They then felt a little better prepared (though we had a very long day at RDS on Thursday and still not caught up sleep from getting up at 5

)

Anyway today...

I totally missed the dressage (my dad arrived to watch/help and I was trying to get him sorted out) and OH decided to go in 10 min early as there were a couple of 'no shows'.

Don't think I missed much (as it was test 111 and I've already moaned about enough in the past) but from the test sheet it sounds as if she was her normal 'don't tell me what to do - you can't MAKE me like dressage' alpha mare self. They weren't last though
smile.gif
......

The SJ worried me (as the ground though sandy was quite firm, and was well up to height), but after a real 'misser' at the first fence they jumped round really fab and confident and just had the last down (2nd part of a double) for 8 faults (average in the class).

as the scariest bit was over. My hands were shaking so much I could hardly hold the camera...

fence 2

fence 4

fence 5 (1st double)

IMG_5007.jpg

and 8 (which was a related 6 strides on a curve to the last huge double)

IMG_5009.jpg

The XC definitely wasn't the biggest in terms of size, but was pretty technical with the odd biggie thrown in. The worst (IMO) was a fair size drop with three strides on an angle to a skinny box thingie, and included the drawbridge type water fence that they had jumped (unaff) earlier this year.

Fence 1 (sorry it came out weird - long lens and I was too close)

IMG_5010.jpg

then tyres, table, drop to log, pallisade to skinny, trakhener downhill..

Big bank..

IMG_5012.jpg

Tiger trap (getting farther away now)

IMG_5013.jpg

then another bank complex, then a 'sally gap' complex (copied from punchestown - 2 mounds with a log on each)

IMG_5016.jpg

(second part)

half coffin (ditch to brush)

IMG_5017.jpg

then the first water (skinny on a hillock to small log drop in)

IMG_5018.jpg

and then I couldn't see the rest of the course

but they climbed a humungous hill, did corner complex at the top, the drop to skinny combo (which she seemingly jumped at the angle she was so confident), the big water and the finish...

Loads of time penalties (but this event is wheeled SO tight - don't think any of ours have got inside the time at whatever level) so don't care...

Even got home in time for the horses to have a couple of hours in the field (while OH and I drank pear cider (very tasty) and watched the RDS puissance on RTE.

Tiring week all in all (but wouldn't have missed it for the world)

Raise a glass with me....

To Sophie.....the ugliest 3yo in the world (I am not joking)

Woohoo, well done Sophie!
grin.gif
Fantastic photos, and WOW she has changed so much!

When's your next outing?

A friend of mine was competing in the Junior 1*, and she told me that a certain rider who has competed at 4* level was eliminated for not wearing gloves during her dressage test in the CNC*!

Just a bit - she really was an uglybug wasn't she

Tattersalls for the Sportsmans champs on the 24th I think is the next outing!!!

Have just been nosy enough to look at the results to see who you are talking about - oops

Thanks

Fiona

Thanks FA2 - she just took a long time to grow into her enormous irish draught head and feet I think

Fortunately she did eventually.

She looks lovely and must have gone well. Congrats!
I w/d my Junior * horse just before the xc, as he is going to PC Champs on Thurs and due to ground/not brilliant course we didn't feel he needed the run, unfortunate as he has been leading! New horse didn't like the piano key corner, so had a long (tearful on my part) walk home! Disheartening day in all, but *record* jumped 2 clear showjumping rounds! Maybe SJAI is the way forward? :P
Well done Fiona, David, and obv Sophie. Great photos too!

Fantastic, very well done to Sophie! She looks like she finds it all very easy! That XC course is so cool, a v. interesting set of natural questions. That bank fence looks as tho it would be confusing? Almost looks like a large table to me?

I don't think you needed to worry about the SJing, in the photos she seems to be clearing them by miles!!!

Well done to all though on a successful 1st Novice!

The XC looks nice, but I agree with O_B that the bank looks like a table or is it just the photo?

Well done!

Its a daunting jump up from pn to novice there is quite a bit of difference between the two especially in the show jumping , however did not seem to catch your two out, fantastic result for a 1st novice, I would be very happy
smile.gif

I was scribing for the CNC*, Janet Hall was judging... Sophie wasn't too bad just looked like she was looking forward to the other 2 phases more!!!

The girl who wore no gloves also almost came into the arena with her boots on too!

Donna was at the water, and Sophie (and David) were fab. through there, so should be some nice pictures!

I am impressed by the huge difference in her from a somewhat 'plain' baby to the really lovely horse she is now.
What a great day you both had & well done to the OH.

Great result and great photos
laugh.gif
You needn't have been worried at all. She looks like a different horse from her 3yr old days. Are you going to stay at novice for the rest of the season or do another PN?

wicked! how old is she now? can't believe how much she's changed- just goes to show that you can't always judge a book by its 3 year old cover!
smile.gif

Thank you!!
Hope you have a great run at the PC champs, and if your new horse is dun?? (I did some SJ scribing as well as being groom/dogsbody) then he is very smart indeed and I'm sure will be an XC machine in no time.

A friend got as far as the steps into the railway line 2 fences from home and got an E there, totally gutting. Our other mare pulls a 'loony moment' every now and then as well - most memorable being a 2 min resistance at a hazard (not a fence) at Rademon when lying 2nd so know how you feel.

Fiona

Thanks O_B and Felicity

I think it was just the camera angle at the bank - there is space for a stride on the top (honestly
smile.gif
)!!

Fiona

David said he saw you - judging by the comments she was a naughty girl!! A straight rein back and a good med canter on the circle are still a work in progress, but I think she could have tried a bit harder in the other bits. I wish I had got up the hill in time to see it though
crazy.gif

I have emailed Donna and ordered pic - it is fabulous, I will put it up in a minute.

Fiona

You don't need to be kind siennamum - she was very plain indeed as a 3yo!!!!

I'm not under any illusions - just as well OH's uncle (who found her for us) is a good judge of a horse and can see potential as well as just a pretty face
smile.gif

Fiona

She is going to do the Sportsman's champs (at PN) at Tatts in a fortnight, and maybe a bit more 1.10 SJing. Will see whats happening after that, though the season peters out up here after 1st week in Sept, so would have to travel if we wanted to do any more.

Fiona

Wow what a clever girl. Great pics - looks like she's having fun! Her face coming to the water speaks volumes about her attitude - lovely.

That bank does look daunting, even if there is room for a stride. Looks like it's flagged for the PN and Intro too - is that right?

Thanks J.

She really enjoys her XC, and mostly her SJ too. Its just the dreaded dresage they have major problems with.

The Intro and PN jumped the smaller bit of the bank to the left hand side in the pic. There were little coloured markers to show where the flags were to be moved to after the novice was over.
