I have a 1995 Iveco lorry and over the past few weeks the speedo has intermittently not been working...

The problem seemed to have occurred after having an isolator fitted which cuts the power to the tacho/speedo. When the isolator is switched off the speedo is showing at 120kmph. When the isolator is switched on and the tacho is reset by opening and closing the tacho door it resets and goes back to 0kmph. Sometimes it works as it should but then for the majority of the time it does not work when and stays on 0 despite resetting it a number of times. However the number of km's still increases and the tacho clock rotates as it should.

Has anyone got any ideas would it could be?

Are you securing the tacho properly when you close it? my tacho won't register speed if the key to the tacho has not been turned quite far enough

One trick which is supposed to work is to put two tacho cards in, one in the normal place and the other behind the plastic flap.

My needle had jumped the stop it sits on when at rest. Unscrew the lens and lift it gently back over...

Hope that helps.

I'd take it back to where I had the isolater fitted. ( if you had it fitted.....if not....)

My Lorry had a dodgy speedo, some part had been fitted wrong and the speedo could not be re fitted. While we worked out what was wrong I would use my sat nav. Not for directions but to tell me what speed I was doing.

Just a suggestion.

We had a DAF that did this, just the same. I found that it had something to do with the needle being in the right place when you shut the door, as to whether it then worked or not.

When it came due for test we had a secondhand head put in (whatever that is!) and it was fine after that.

Sorry I am not more techo savvy!

Brilliant thanks everyone - a few things to try! It's going in for it's plating in a couple of weeks so trying to get it sorted before then. Will let you know how I get on!

Oddly, it's not actually tested as far as I know, certainly if you sign the "don't need a tacho" form. But I hate having to use a GPS for speed, worth getting it fixed. Pretty sure that if the odometer and clock are working it will be an easy fix.

Used to happen to my old lorry. I had to open and slam shut the tacho cover a few times to get the speedo working when it stopped.

If you are opening and closing whilst moving it will fall back to 0 and stay there. This only works if you are stationary. Could well be a power surge when you turn on the isolator, bit like the speedo goes round and back if ever you have to jump start.

That's the same with mine however as the speedo is in kilometers and that misleads me into thinking I'm going faster than I am, I tend to look at the satnav
