Ivermectin?

I have always used ivermectin for de-fleaing, but I now have a lurcher who is very clearly part collie.

I don't want to get it anywhere near him, obviously. Does it preclude using it on any of my other dogs?
 
Ivermectin is an orally administered wormer for sheep and cattle. How or why would you use it on a dog? The repercussions, regardless of breed, could be catastrophic and would it work against external parasites?

By collie do you mean border collie? My understanding is that the ivermectin sensitivity/MDR gene mutation occurs in rough and smooth collies, not typically borders. You can test for it with a blood sample or cheek swab.

Many flea and worm control products for dogs contain ivermectin, Alec.

Editing for clarity: By which I mean milbemycin, moxidectin etc.

No, never. The warnings on the Ivermectin containers (I use it for sheep), give dire warnings, which I've heeded! I would have thought that if fleas were a problem, and a non-licenced product was to be used, then Cyromazine (Vetrazin) or Dicyclanil(sp!) (Clik), would be safer and of more use.

Ivermectin is a common horse wormer Alec, in Eqvalan and many others. I've never heard of delaying a dog with it, but it doesn't sound like a bad idea as long as you don't have a collie.

Any dog can have a reaction to ivermectin not just collie related breeds. And any dog is at risk if overdosed. Obviously it depends what preparation you are using as to whether you can be accurate with the dose - under dosing is of no use and overdosing can cause seizures, blindness and death. When safe and effective flea and worming treatments as so cheap why would you use one that could kill your dog? I don't understand

Ivermectin is the drug of choice to treat mange as long has the dog does not have the gene (MDR1) that makes it dangerous. This is found in all collie & herding breeds as well as a few others. It isn't used for fleas on dogs and there are safer, more effective treatments.
 
Ivermectin can be used to treat parasites but it has a low toxicity index(ie even small overdoses can kill or cause serious issues) so it is generally only used when other licensed products fail to solve an issue.its also in a group of drugs that affect dogs carrying the a specific gene(mdr1)

I wouldnt be using it at all given the choice tbh.there are many safer products on the market.

what ivermec product have you been using?
