IW505 jockey door?

I have a moderately old 505 and there is only an outside catch on the jockey door. This really annoys me as I often want to be able to fasten it and unfasten it from either side, if you see what I mean.

If you are inside, there is no means of keeping the door shut (perhaps so someone can get changed in private at a show). Am I the only one? And if others have this problem, do you have any ideas for solving it? I'm thinking in terms of some sort of magnetic catch as it doesn't need to be securely fastened from the inside, just held shut. Comments?

I'd also like some means of supporting a feed bowl in front of the breast bar so a shy loader could be encouraged to load knowing that it will find food inside. If you put it on the floor, that's where they are going to look. Then, if they find nothing, they bring their heads up and hit it on the breast bar! That is hardly going to encourage them to load! What do you do?
 
Same problem but I get changed very quickly!
With the feed bowl problem, either load the horse without the breast bar in place and the feed bowl on the floor then when the back door is shut you can remove the feed bowl and manouver the horse into position and attach the breast bar or you could get a subbs over the door feeder and hang that on the breast bar, I am inclined to opt for the former as the horse is used to looking on the floor for feed.
 
Don't suppose when they were designing trailers they thought they would be used as a toilet ;) Can't help with the door but I have used a feed bucket you can hang over stable doors. It does fit in the breast bar.

I suspect because it was a man , where else does a lady pee when parked at the side of the road before heading off for five hours hunting ? I. My case in a bucket with a few shavings in it, known as the litter tray.
 
Point taken :) Although when I took my friends ponies to a show for her she pulled out this adult potty with a seat and lid on, it was very funny as she had even come equipped with toilet paper :)
 
I have a 510, and got my husband to fit a caravan door handle to my jockey door for exactly that reason, the 511 etc do have a door lockable from the inside, but don't know if you could persuade that type of fitting onto the 505 door.
I like my home comforts so have also had a sink and cooker fitted!
 
Thanks, everyone, you've given me some points to ponder. Yes, feed bucket on the floor and breast bar detached. Duh!

Love the idea of a portaloo in the 505!

I'm a bloke but do have female helpers who need to lock doors from the inside!

Off to Google caravan door catches....
 
Why not just put one of those spin round catch things, you could make one the right strength for the job. I can't think what the name of them is but essentially a flat bit of wood and a screw through it so it can turn to a horizontal position and prevent the door being pulled open and when in a vertical position it doesn't affect the door.

Take the breast bar out?

I'm needing a door catch that will open from both sides or I know what's going to happen!

Someone goes into the trailer to unload a pony, puts the catch in the closed position while inside, removes the pony, then tries to get into the trailer via the jockey door from outside, but it is locked on the inside.... Murphy's Law!:(
 
I'm having the exact same issue at the moment. I am currently using a bungee to keep the door shut. I am going to take it to my lock horsebox builder and see if he can put a lock that can be opened and closed from both sides! I will be sleeping in there so it needs to close from the inside! I'm even thinking about having a fold down bunk in the side I don't use as a only tow one! Will let you know the outcome!
 
Bailer twine tied to the catch on the outside of the door that is long enough to either hold or tie inside somewhere while peeing :D

Sometimes we feed our boy on the box if have to go early to set up etc. I have a flexitub thing with 2 handles on & clip a lead rope to each handle then tie the other ends at each side of breast bar :)

Ha well I suppose so but I can't imagine why you should do that if you are just using it as a changing room and toilet catch :p.

Well, actually, I do a bit of loading training and that always seems to involve going in the jockey door and out the ramp, or vice versa. Yes, I've used string, but I hate doing it that way.

The problem with most door catches is the rubber sealer on the edge of the doorway. I don't want to cut it. A simple magnetic catch would do for most of the time but there is no way to attach it neatly. If the door is swinging open, there is always the possibility of a youngster (equine) deciding it would be interesting to exit that way!

Well done you! I was looking at "slam catches" for tractors but they are all very expensive and don't look very nice. That looks a lot neater. I do like to do things properly and bungie cord and string annoy me. A character defect, I suppose!:confused:
 
China. I have a camping bed for in mine, it folds up in a concertina a bit like those camping chairs, thats how i got round my issue. That way i can still carry all my other junk and just put it up when i need it, i actally use it on the horse side.
 
Yes, the classic has a proper door that opens and closes from both sides. And of course it should be properly designed to pee in - isn't that what the hole in the floor is for! ;-)

I wonder if you could fit a 'classic' door onto a standard 505?

Me too, much better design, don't know why everyone raves about Ifors! The Rice Richardson also has cut out top door over the front ramp, which for big horses and youngsters that leap is much better.

It's annoying when it says engaged and you wait for ages only to realise its not really engaged at all:D:D:D:p

You do get loo locks that can be opened with a coin from the outside, that might solve the issue of someone locking it then coming out the other way...
 
If you do the following, there is no need to shut the door.

get into the nearside of the trailer and undo the breastbar. Pull the front bit of the centre partition over (like you do to front unload a horse from the off side) and tadaaaa, you have a privacy screen to a little odd shaped cubicle to change in!
