If it gets a bit lively hold on to the front of your saddle or grab a handful of mane.

You will probably be fine when you get off - its tonight when you have been sitting down or tomorrow morning when you get out of bed it will hurt!!

Absolutely nothing you can do about it - just grin and bear it!!

and have a nice warm bath with Radox or something in it before bed.

Try stretching before you get on so your muscles are warmed up, have a hot bath when you get home, and relax cos the more you stress about falling off the more likely you are to fall off

Deep Heat is very undervalued IMO

Yes! More horse riding

It's muscles - the more you use them the easier it will get, we're all stiff and achey to start with. I can ride a horse all day but an hours cycle ride will kill me - different muscles

Have nice hot bath or shower afterwards.

Seriously, I seem to remember you are one of our fewer male HHO'ers, so protect your, erm, vitals

by wearing well fitting underwear and remember to sit up straight on your bum bones.

Hope you have a fabby time and look forward to hearing all about it

Ooh have fun! I recently got back on after 25 years or so a couple of months ago. I would say it took about 3-4 rides for my thighs particularly to not ache like mad the next day, but it does get your tummy, arm and bum muscles too, so can recommend the Radox. I think the worst bit is when you get off, and your legs meet the ground, they feel like they're at funny angles or something as you try to put them together - a bit like that thing where you push your hands outwards between your thighs for a minute then try to hold them at your sides and they rise up, so I tend to walk to the front of the horse immediately to pat then return to do the stirrup leathers (but actually just so I don't look stupid falling about with my legs at odd angles and they kind of even out with walking).

If you're nervous of falling off I found a great confidence giver (given that we were cantering with the kids, so it was a fast hack) was to have a neck strap (just an old stirrup leather round the neck) just on there just in case - didn't really need it but it was good to know it was there, and as Slinky says there's the front of the saddle and the mane too.

Have a great time!

My old riding instructer when I was little used to say 'look where you want to go or you'll go where you look'. I think he meant look ahead and plan or appreciate where you are going, take notice of and enjoy your surroundings but don't look down.

it's been repeated in different ways over the years but message basically is if you look down, your more likely to fall down! It unbalances you as your head weighs quite a big percentage of your body weight and if you look down it tilts all that weight forward down the horses shoulder, hence, you are more likely to follow it!

Don't worry so much about falling off and your less likely to as your muscles will relax, trust your horse and he'll trust you, if you get on uptight and nervous he'll spend the whole ride thinking 'what is this loon afraid of, I'd better look out for scary stuff' so he'll be on edge and spooky too.

Have fun, as I remind myself when I get nervous before a jumping class, hobbies are what we do for FUN!!!

Have fun! I agree with the hot bath suggestions, and also think a stretch afterwards is beneficial (as with any form of exercise). The undies point is a good one, my OH seriously regretted it the time he wore baggy boxers...
