Going to look at some trailers tomorrow, one of which has a mounted tack pack. how useful are they? what can you fit in them? do they get in the way? Thanks! xxx
We have one on our Richardson trailer but it is outside on the front of the trailer, is that the same as the Ifor?
If so I can highly recommend! it is fantastic, tack fits nicely in and isn't all over the car and it holds almost all the kit as well.
I think the Ifor's one is on the inside of the jockey door, and mum was worrying about it 'getting in the way' but i thought it would be better to have something there than everything all over the car boot? the new trailers without it are £4000, but with it they're £4272- is it worth it? xx
They are good for generally storing random bits of tack in but I think you will struggle to fit a full size saddle in it. We have used it for 2 pony saddles (15") and they only just fit (and that's without saddle cloths on them!).
I am glad I have it though as we store boots, buckets, grooming kits etc in it which keeps them out of the way when travelling.
My folks are selling their trailer and have been offered £150 for their 10yr old tackpack- and this is from a IWT dealer! We haven't ever used it because we couldn't fit the saddles in it (and if the saddles are going in the car everything else might as well go in there too!) but clearly to retain their value that well lots of people must like them
We looked at these and at the portable tack packs as well. I felt, clambering around the trailer, that they would get in the way in an emergency. If you needed access through the jockey door in a tight space you simply wouldn't be able to get through. Plus there were quite a few reports that they are a bit of a theft risk as you can see that there is one through that nice long window the new Ifors have - even if you don't put anything valuable in it having it smashed into would be annoying enough. But for us the clincher was that we couldn't get our daughter's saddle in it anyway. We just have a tack pod in the back of the tow car which works brilliantly. But we are towing with a Defender 110 long wheel base - so we have loads of space.
Re-reading this.... did you see the article in last week's H&H about overloading the nose of a trailer? I don't know if it applies to you depending on what car you would tow with but it would be worth considering that having tack there might be unsafe if not in fact illegal on tow weights. VOSA around us are getting quite aggressive - I suppose the fines are a way of raising money!
