James Gray expected in court today on welfare charges

Charlotte White, H&H deputy news editor

2 June, 2009

The trial of Buckinghamshire horse trader James Gray on trading standards charges restarts today (Tuesday) at Folkestone Magistrates Court.

Mr Gray, of Spindle Farm, Amersham, faces fives charges, dating from September and October 2007, which are being brought by Kent County Council.

He is accused of travelling horses through Dover in an unsuitable lorry and without a valid health certificate for the animals.

The case was due to be heard on 27 May but Mr Gray was unwell. He denies all the charges against him.

A verdict is not expected until 17 July.

OH POOR J.G BEING UNWELL.....WHAT ABOUT ALL THE POOR NEGLECTED HORSES IN HIS CARE ?? OR IS THIS A CONSPIRACY AS WELL ?

And yet again, he's denying all the charges against him....poor JG, everyone is ganging up on him.

Oh come on everyone.

We are all being so horrible to him.

We all know that he loves and treats his horses so well and everyone is out to get him,his farm was and is in top condition.

Total BS. That case is to do with him apparently not having a licence to export horses.

Why dont you all ask yourselves why none of these charges were brought against him before the whole RSPCA crap?

More [****] from didcot.

In addition to an unsuitable lorry and no health certificates?

because they weren't relevant to that case? Just hazarding a guess....

If JG didnt have health papers then he could not have exported any animals. Katy Robinson told the court that she would often go to SF to examine horses and issue health certificates for animals that Mr Gray was taking abroad.

People carrying animals are randomly stopped and checked. JG would have had to show his licence and health certificates for each animal.

Funny how the lorry which he used all the time to export horses was suddenly deemed unsuitable after the raid.

Not sure I'm understanding what you mean here?

I think you'll probably find, Patty, that Trading Standards intended to bring this case before the magistrate prior to the raid on Spindles Farm. And it is the matter of the Court timetable that has dictated when the case was to be heard.

Firstly he was bringing horses through Dover. Doesnt state which way. He may have been importing.

Secondly, it also doesnt state he didnt have health certificates.

Finally, he hasnt actually been found guilty yet. Well except by Paddyfruitloop! How about we let the courts decide?

I believe that this case concerns animals being imported..

Well you must know more about his past record on importing horses than I do!

Hey ho! Let the courts decide.

It is pretty obvious to me what this is all about.

This case was scheduled to be heard way before the Amersham situation came to light. There is no conspiracy, nobody is picking on him, the guy just keeps on getting into trouble.

The problem is if he is found guilty then “Patty Wainthropp” will say it was another ghastly mistake and JG is innocent and devote all her time to telling us the truth, which for some reason only known to her never came up in court etc. etc. etc.......

Umm sorry but the bit at the top says that those are the charges - unsuitable lorry and lack of valid health certificates. I imagine that can be checked directly with the relevant court in fact probably came from the relevant court. The other possibility is that you are insinuating that Charlotte White, H&H deputy news editor is reporting inacurrate information...

Note the date this charge relates to: 2007 - well before the latest charges. Once again, the bloke isn't being victimised. He's done wrong.

Yes - he is driving an unsuitable lorry Patty. It might be a perfectly decent lorry. Stalled to carry 5, not 25? How do you know it wasn't suitable? Were you there as well?

And who cares whether he was importing or exporting them? In this case it doesn't really matter does it? He had them in his lorry, he didn't have the right paperwork, probably there were too many in there for the size of lorry.

Fact

It is very carefully phrased.

JM you are a writer. You would be aware of how the meaning of a sentence can change depending on the word you emphasise.
wink.gif

If you bother to do it, which sadly I did
grin.gif
, you can get a different implied meaning for each different word emphasised.

IMO if there were no health certificates at all it would have said exactly that. But it didnt
wink.gif

LOL! Like I said, careful phrasing.

Oh I did note the word valid which is why I used it in responding to you - you are right it doesn't say NO health certificates, it refers to their validity.

However the fact remains he is accused of travelling horses through Dover in an unsuitable lorry and without a valid health certificate for the animals.

I also agree that an accusation does not mean a binding fact and a court judgement should be waited for before we figuratively tar and feather him - should he warrent it
