Totally agree with you, but didn't really expect anything else. The legal & sentencing system needs a big shake up IMO.

What a total farce! Has he been banned from keeping animals, has he been heavily fined, has he been given a custodial sentence?? No, just given unpaid community work (whatever that is) and to add insult, we are now expected to sympathise with him because he had a "nervous breakdown".
Personally I think he was long overdue a visit to a psychiatric unit, and not as a result of his visits by the police. The man is evil and a danger to both humans and animals. I just hope to God this isn't a pointer for the way the Court case later in the year might go.

I'm always mystified that people like JG can get anyone to represent them, but I suppose it's all income for the lawyers. Do they actually believe what they say in court, or is the whole thing a charade?

Agree with you there Daffodil, the guy is a nutter and now it's official.

And just what is a 'minor nervous breakdown' when it's at home? I'll tell you this, my husband was diagnosed with one last year and he couldn't even leave the house to buy a pint of milk for two months, let alone go to work, so how come JG was able to go swanning off to carry on horse trading????

...or perhaps they have looked at all the evidence (something I may remind everyone on here that WE haven't had access to!) and may, just may, think that he is innocent of being the person who starved these horses? And if he is not the perpetrator then it is quite understandable that someone may try to protect their property in such a manner.

erm.....you do all realise this is only the assault charge dont you. This has nothing to do with the horses that were removed.

There are still a number of cases still to come to court with regards to his animals/transport/passport irregularities.

JG is going to be in court way into next year yet.

Lets not get hysterical.

Tia you took the words right out of my mouth... Would we not all protect our business family & animals in the same manner if provoked?

Thank god Spaniel

, was beginning to think I was the only one who realised this.

Slightly off the main point here, but if the animals were in as terrible condition as some would lead others to believe then how could there be £160,000 worth there?

Hmmmm

Yep. I was just making comment to the person who is finding difficulty in understanding why lawyers would choose to represent JG, who has also been accused of the other crimes.

Penny; I would assume the figure given would come from his business accounts and receipts. Certainly where my equine stock are concerned, the tally is taken from the amount of money I have spent purchasing them. I understand what you are questioning though.

And yes M_G; I would put up a huge fight if anyone threatened my business, family or animals; who knows what we are all capable of under this sort of provocation. I'm surprised that, apparently, so few people on here would take a stand for their animals and family, let alone their business.

If someone was taking my horses away from me, i think I would be very angry, as would most horse owners especially if it was your business that you have spent thousands of pounds on.
I might have guessed that paddywhack would start this thread off, what a suprise!!

Thankyou for clearing that up Tia, I was assuming the (then) current market value.

I just wanted to query that bit really, not knowing the whole story I don't feel qualified enough to comment on anything else.

I can understand making a stand to defend your home and your business, and if it was a legitimate and well run business I think there would be nothing but support. Time will tell whether that is the case, or whether the behaviour on the day was more reflective of somebody who is of a violent disposition running a disreputable business. This isn't going to be over for a very long time, I think.

Hi Sue, just tagging on here

.
If said horses and ponies were instead cattle and pigs, would you all be so outraged at their 'supposed' condition? Would the notice have hit the news and would there have been such an outcry? I dont think so

. Millions of hens are living in really horrific conditions and (thankfully) dont reach a year old just so that you can have a fresh(ish) egg next to your bacon which has been bunged full of anti b's and has had its tail cut off and its canine teeth removed to diminish the possibility of 'canabolism' brought about by the un-natural habitat, overcrowding and complete lack of stimulation that is present from when they are born till they are loaded up screaming to be electrocuted and have their throats cut.
Im sorry folks-I dont find it any different than the lot of many other farm animals apart from the fact we put saddles on these animals and climb on their backs etc.
I repeat, had he been a bovine dealer, would there have been such an outcry???
Mairi.

.
PS, I might have acted in the same way re police etc had my family and living been threatened-its so easy to judge while sitting on your nice cosy armchair.Living it is another matter. can we all stop being so 'holier than thow'?as my Gran said..'there but for the grace of God, go I'. Isnt there something/one else to gossip about?

An ex-friend of mine once got community service, they were bussed to a wood where they were meant to collect up sticks before being bussed home again, in actual fact they lounged about smoking till it was time to get the bus, paid for by us tax payers, home again. Gosh, what a dreadful punishment indeed!!

Just wondering where JG will be required to do his community work? Perhaps he'll be one of those chaps in a yellow vest picking up the litter on the verges.

Considering most people, even non-horsey people, have heard of JG and what he is supposedly done to his horses, what sort of a reception will he get from his fellow workers? Could be fun!!

Perhaps the Chairman of the Bench had an underlying reason for giving him community work. I for one, wouldn't be able to leave well alone, if I found him sweeping the pavements of our shopping precinct.

Well at least he got something. One of the enforcement officers at the Council i work for got punched last year, the CPS wouldnt even prosecute. A fellow council officer (me) and a police officer witnessed it, BUT because this fellow had about 8 or 9 customers who all wrote statements saying other wise he got away with it GRRRRRR.
