Hi Folks,

Here's a lovely question for a Monday morning (smile, it's Monday!)

I'm just coming back into ownership again after way too many years out. As far as I can remember (too many years!), every horse I bought \ owned was up to date on flu\tet jabs & I kept them that way.

However the situation now is, dream horse found but not been jabbed in a few years (kept privately) looks like he was started on a course of Duvaxin IET for the first 2 jabs in 2007 but nothing since - vet check all checks out bar that. Soooo it looks like either I or the current owner are going to have to start the course again!

My question to you is this...in terms of a livery yard accepting her (they want to see her vacc record, fair enough) how long after the first jab do I have to wait before I can move him home? Trying to avoid the situation where I'm keeping him at the current owners yard & not getting the bonding chance. It's a bit of an unfamiliar situation, as I've always been "up to date" until now...and it does seem a great shame to let the dream horse slip through ones fingers!

Thanks all :)

Hmm, I have known many a horse move onto various yards I've been on who haven't had immunisation, either youngsters or they have lapsed as in your case.

The YO's haven't had a problem with it.

If you are starting off again, you have an initial jab, then another either 4 or 6 weeks later and then another one at 6 months ..... I think.
Quite when immunity kicks in, I don't know.

My suggestion would be to ask the vet and the YO, see if she's happy for you to move on and then get started.

Re immunity - The advice is normally 2 weeks after vaccination - but this is after the 2nd jab. There won't be much of an immune response after the 1st one. Probably best to talk to your vet and also the YO.

If the new livery owner wants you to wait then the minimum time is 4 weeks.

Under Jockey club rules they have had to have the second jab before they can enter racecourse stables.

If you want this horse I would get on with it as soon as possible.
