After soooooooooooooooooooo long nursing Jack through his broken leg spending a summer getting his mangled feet sorted, xrays, tests, physio, teeth, back, saddle etc etc checked. Feed sorted back on a routine and starting to forge ahead with his reschooling and finally getting to pop him over a little xc fence a few weekend back and really feeling him forget his old hang ups and loosen up and go really nicely and feel like a real horse not a broken exracer he is now lame.

I thought it was a bruised sole coz of the hard ground and our mega farrier came out today and can't find a thing so tomorrow the vet is on his way to investigate it further. I just can't think what it can be unless it's just a strain or he has twisted it because he has had EVERYTHING checked and checked and checked. Vibes please because of his break I always assume the worse and havinng never known him sound (he has always been broken to me) having him sound was a real novelty and it has been a hrd slog to work out what we needed to do to get him 100% and now this

I am trying to stay positive and am hoping it is just a twisted fetlock on the ice but there is no heat no swelling nothing just lameness which is worse in the paddock than on the concrete, his feet have been thoroughly xrays so no activity, deteriation, navicular, artritus etc etc so it MUST be a soft tissue thing, yeah? tell me I'n right please

Sorry for rambly glum post but he has been through so much I just want him better asap

Oh no, so sorry to hear that. Lots of vibes for the vet visit tomorrow. Maybe the bruise just hasn't developed enough for the farrier to find anything and he's being a super woosy TB.

He is very woosy and he has had a bruise before and you would have thought he had brokeen his leg again! I'm just a bit

coz I just want him better he has been crook more than sound in the last 2 years it's time he had some goood luck

i have my fingers crossed for you C...if it helps my TB is very precious- he will perdiodically go lame for no reason at all- i just box rest for a week and then he's fine...never has any swelling or heat or anything...he is a miracle of science...so maybe Jack is just a wuss like mine!

Fingers crossed for bruising...

But wanted to give my own experiences to give you hope in case it is not this. My mare was not quite right in front, and she too had pretty rubbish feet. She would grow such long toes and her heels were incredibly low no matter what we tried to do.

I had the foot xrayed... nothing!

I then opted for an MRI and this showed she had slight inflammation to the impar ligament which was being further strained by her long toes etc. She was put on a few weeks of box rest (2 weeks in total) and in eggbars with gel pads and the difference was almost immediate. She also had IRAP treatment into the ligament

thank you he has had his feet xrayed and as a result we could see he had lots of toe and so coould be cut back much shorter than you would think from just looking at the foot and this made him much better, I'm wondering if maybe he needs pads if he just can't cope with the hard going...

Have to admit, I didn't think he looked terribly happy when you took him xc...but maybe that's me being sensitive.

He's maybe just tweaked something. My grey is a right one for mysterious lameness (usually the week before a BE!). Never any heat or swelling - usually caused by pratting around (which is why he is not allowed out with anything other than a 30 year old Highland x ID as he can't be trusted!!).

Fingers crossed everything's okay.

You have to understand his history to know why he behaves/moves like he does. That's not a true example of how he goes he was very wound up that day he hadn't jumped xc for 2 years and he was expecting to get galloped and raced as he was used to that but trust me that was all excited tension not pain he has been 100% sound since his feet were sorted, with the exception of a bruise, and he was 100% sound after xc and was full of beans no stiffness the next day and hacked out lovely fwd and loose. I have racked my brains and the first thing I thought was maybe the xc strained him but that was over a week ago and if it had tweaked/damaged something it would have showed by now I would think?....

I am really hoping it's just a bruise or a strain...

It could actually be the wedges which are causing the tenderness... My vet (specialist lameness expert... now know him very well which is no good thing) said they are good for short term solution, but longer term they can actually cause heel pain and unlevel steps as a result.

Just thought it could be worth thinking about

My mare has been in eggbars now since August (had padding in til October) and touch wood she is looking really good on her tootsies at the moment. Rode her tonight and the arena was a little hard which is when it would really show up in the past and she worked really well and consistently in the stride.

Could he have pus in the foot that just isn't showing yet? My grey horse used to get them a lot and you could always tell one was brewing because he would get just a little footy turning on the hard, then you'd have a few days of being looking not quite right, then you'd find him standing in the field like he'd broken a leg and sure enough, he'd have an abscess. Sometimes they take a while to really get going..

maybe.... but our farrier is normally dead hot on spotting puss/bruise etc but I guess if it's brewing it might be under the shoe so he wouldn't react to the pincers....let's hope it's just pus....oooowwwww I feel more nervous as the minutes pass, won't be able to sleep tonight

my mums horse had a stone bruise in the summer and it took over a month for it to show and then heal, we all kept looking for something more complex but just a bad bruise so hopefully thats all it is with Jack.

would second the wedges being a bad idea long term, they tend to crush the heels further rather than encourage new growth.

thank you I am texing all these suggestions to my mother who will be there today as I can't get the time off. I'm sure she's annoyed at her phone beeping every 2 secs! Vet comes at 12 so fingers will be firmly crossed till 1
