Hi,
probably a stupid question but was wondering if anyone has a jack russel or a cross with cats and their experiances? I would like puppy, chihuahua or a jackrussel/chi cross but I'm just bit worried about the hunting and chase instinct within the russel.

Will it be okay since it will be growing up with them around? what do you think? bad idea?

If you get a puppy you should be fine as the cat is already established. Have seen it work well in a few circumstances.

I don't have a jack or a jack cross but I do have a terrier. She has a strong prey drive but was firmly put in her place by our larger cat when she was a pup. She'll occasionally chase them in play but they're part of her 'pack' so she'll happily sleep next to them/share food etc

I have a jack russell cross. The cats (6 of them) were here first and she is now 11 and never had a problem. She came as a puppy which I think helps as she was brought up being taught not to chase and as I type she is sleeping on the sofa with two of them :-)

Oz my JRT has never lived with cats, but has visited friends who have cats but no dogs. Cat was rather bold, Oz won't even make eye contact with it. He also won't go near the yards old Tom Cat, or any cat that stands it ground or walks away. He will chase a cat that runs, but can be called away, no problem. Have no doubt that with careful introduction he could live with a cat.

I had a jr when I was little and cos cats were there first it was fine. The one I have now see's cats as prey so that wouldn't work out. But if I had a cat when I got him I imagine it would have been fine.

OK, I read this as crossing a jrt with a cat!

I need to lie down now.

P

So did I! My first thought was "you give it a go and tell us how you get on" :p

Sorry OP, I'm no use, but you did make me laugh :)

PMSL, I thought I'd be seeing some interesting pics on here!

May I present the 'Bunnypuss'?!

we had a two year old jack russell nutter and we got a kitten and it was fine. a bit of chasing and barking but kitten soon put her in her place. got a second kitten two years later and the jack russell treated her like it was her puppy! she was very maternal!

I have two terrier jrt types, one was bought up with cats, and will cuddle with the cat, and the cat washes him, the other was two-ish when a got him, and had not been bought up with cats, he is fine with our cat up to a point, but id cat runs off down the garden the dog will chase him! But on a day to day basis they are fine with each other,

My JRT and cat have a love hate relationship... the cat loves to hate the jrt and the jrt is just petrified of the cat... all works out very well!

When Millie (the JRT) came home, I let the cat tell her in no uncertain terms what was allowed and what wasnt allowed, since then I've never had any problems at all (it helps that Millie was less than half the size of the cat when she came home!)

I'm sure you'll be fine!

My first pic so hope it doesn't turn out too big!
^^This is the reaction of my mums cat to our JRT x Chihuahua!

And below with her life long pal Jinx (the cat was a BOGOF with the dog!)

She's a few years older now (have only just dug out the Photobucket album again). Will try and add a few pics of her now when I figure out how to.

She does get on with cats and regularly shares a bed with my 2. I do have to keep a very close eye on her chase instinct around cats and especially Chickens (she has dispatched of a few  ). THey make cracking little dogs providing they are treated as dogs and not handbagged! God only knows what she would have been like if this would have happened to her.

I have a JR x whippet. Plus a 100% whippet. They love my two cats, they all sleep in the same bed and we all go for a walk together. My sister has two JRT's. They get along fine with their cat and all these dogs had kittens introduced to them when they were adult dogs.

Don't believe the hysterical press that cat people give out that dogs and cats don't get along, or that certain breeds won't get along with cats. It's nonsense. If you are sensible about introducing a new pet into your house, there is no reason why everyone can't get along.

My JRTs dad and sister live with a cat and they're fine with it- mine hadn't seen a cat until she was about 1 but she then got on ok with it. She even got on well with our guinea pig! It's all about what they're used to as puppies, they can easily be trained not to chase. Mine will happily kill rats and mice but I can call her off at any point, and she knows not to catch rabbits etc.

The Misses Russell say that cats/chickens/mice/rats and the odd brown snake are all fair game. Also that a "Panic of Peacocks"is great fun.

this, dogs know there place

Thankyou for all the replies!

Gwena those pictures are absolutely gorgeous, I LOVE their tummies hahaha.
I want a pure chihuahua really but I just find most of them so overpriced and I don't really want to pay someone so much, when really its just their greed imo.

I do like the look of jackchis, I'm not a huge terrier fan but I do like smooth haired russels.
Hence my question! but no I think I'm just overworrying, I've had rabbits and hamster with cats in the past, which I'm sure were in more danger with my cats than my cats would be with a dog lol.

Thankyou for posting this as well, I do love whippets but I must admit I have been put off them by the fear of what I've read with cats, I'm def going to be more open minded now on what I'm looking for.

Oh dont believe everything you hear about whippets/lurchers/greyhounds, I got my lurcher from rescue aged about 18 months - 2 years, she is absolutely fine with my cat, in fact the cat pushes her around. They are absolutely super dogs too!

Would definitely recomment looking in rescue for a JRTX or Chihuahuax types

If I were you I would avoid pure Chi's like the plague! If you do go for the more old fashioned type with what they call a 'deer head'. You probably already know this but the apple dome heads are actually quite dangerous in that like babies, the frontanel (sp?) rarely closes so a little knock to the head could have dire consequences

That said I have had a few issues with my girl in that she has inherited the Chihuahua jaw but has go the JRT teeth - quote the vet " sweet jesus it looks like Jaws in there"!!! so have had to have LOTS of teeth removed to fit the jaw. Also the worse thing is that she has inherited the JRT nails on small Chihuahua feet. She isn't heavy enough to wear them down naturally and detests having them clipped (is a 2 person job at the best!). My old neighbour had her littermate brother and he is a lot bigger than her - more JRT but has the daintiest nails and no teeth issues.

This is 'Mouse' looking all foxy in this years snow :-)

I dread to think what a JRT/Chi crossed with a cat would turn out to be like - methinks almost as scary as the thought of cats with opposable thumbs! :-)
